NADA wholesale trade in at Airstream dealer... Really???

Just stopped in at Vogt Airstream of DFW, wife fell in love with a Tommy Bahama. 5 in stock, they offered nada wholesale for my 2014 30'. About half of what I expected. Not what I expected from an Airstream dealer.

It's an offer you can easily refuse. They know what it is worth on the market, they just don't know that YOU know.

Sell your 30'. With a pocket full of cash, call Colonial or Foley or whoever and tell them what you want and what you are prepared to pay.

The funny thing is that I told him I knew what it was worth, and why. I had my checkbook in my pocket and would have closed the deal if they had been ANYWHERE near reasonable. They probably did me a favor!

Sell your FC yourself on Airstream Classifieds. Check around for TB. Call Colonial. Might be a drive, but they are reasonably priced. Good to deal with.

Same kind of thing happened to us a couple of weeks ago. Sales person said how great they hold their value then we told her we had a flying cloud to trade. After that, they only offered wholesale. So do Airstream hold their value or not?
I know we can get more selling on our own but thatís not the point here.

Have you tried going on NADA's site and putting all the options that the Airstream has so you can get a better rate and also get comparables from other dealers? The dealer will offer you the lowest they can knowing what they are worth so they can turn a profit. However, if you are armed with what others are selling them for, there is a better chance of getting close to what you want.

Reason I was asking is because when I was trying to finance a used AS, the bank quoted a value which was way too low. I went to the site and put in all the options etc and the value went up.

Spring time is coming, which means people are getting the itch... The sales people know it and have no reason to sacrifice any profit at this point, the guy who came in behind you will buy what you didn't. Best to try these kind of deals in the fall..
Now is definitely the time to list it yourself and reap the same rewards that the dealership is looking for, see what the best deal you can for the one you want and be willing to go somewhere else for it.

Sales reps are not (normally) the owner. They are following the guidelines given to them at their training and morning sales meetings. If you are a serious buyer and have the money ready it's usually best to dial in on a specific unit, say you are ready make a serious offer and write a check today, then ask to work directly with the someone that has authority to deal. The rep will still get paid and any deal is better than no deal. I found that the dealership in Denver flat out does not take trades of any type and they tell you that up front before you even start talking about a transaction. They tell you right up front that you will get a better price selling it on the open market directly to a a buyer - and they are pretty much right <plus> it shifts the work to sell the trailer and any risk to you. My bet is the dealer you are working with doesn't want to hassle with trade-ins and doesn't have room to store them while they figure out what to do with them - but - if you insist they will basically take it for a price they can deal with ...

Nada wholesale trade

I also tried to buy at Voght since I live in Texas. They would not meet the price I got elsewhere and told me, "Someone else Will pay the price we are asking". I bought out of state and saved thousands. You may do better with other dealers, as others have said. And you will do better selling on your own.

Nada Prices Really

I had the same experience with the Northern California dealer. They took my AS on consignment and listed it for $30,000 over wholesale price, a price I did not agree on. No wonder it didn't sell. I've since pulled it and will be selling it myself. I had to pay them a "safety check" fee before they would take it and a detail fee. They are more interested in selling new. Beware.

I have found that you're always better off to sell it to a private party. Both of you will get a better deal. Then you are free to negotiate like mad on a straight sale.
My $0.02.

You can also try selling it on consignment via one of the RV dealers in your area. We did that with the B+ motor home we inherited, before buying Rocinante. Yep, we sold the old RV before buying a new one.
It's probably possible to get more by selling the trailer yourself directly, but this was a pretty painless way to sell it vs. trying to get a decent trade value for it. Something to consider.

When the Classic 33 came out a year or so ago, MSRP of just shy of $160K, my sweetie and I went to our local AS dealer to see it, and she fell in love with it. I began calling AS dealers and found one who said they'd order one for me $120K. I asked them if they would take my 2016 FC 27 FB in on a trade-in, and they said they would but could give me only NADA wholesale price for it --- $46K --- on a trailer that appeared from ads to be worth in the range of $65-70K. Ouch!!! They encouraged me to sell it myself.

Oh, I have no doubt your trailer was worth $65-70K - but only if you sold it yourself or maybe via consignment. RV dealers, just like car dealers, are merciless when it comes to valuing a trade-in against a new unit. Air Forum classifieds is a great place to start if you want to DIY the sale of your current Airstream.

List it on Airstream Classifieds and Airstream Hunter. You have to do the work, but youíll be paid handsomely.

Everyone recognizes that NADA is fiction for Airstreams, that's why I was surprised they tried to use it.
