Craigslist fraud

I got email from someone this morning explaining "Saw your ad on Craigslist and spent a few minutes at your wonderful website ... If it is still for sale then, I'd like to take a look..."

The problem is I did not know my Airstream was for sale. After a brief search of Craigslist, I found this item. The lister has a few pix of HIS Overlander with a link to my website to infer the two Airstreams are one and the same.

Although his actions do not hurt me, I reported the listing to Craigslist in the hope that no one gets duped.

WoW Tom! I had a similar thing happen on ebay awhile back!

Buyer Beware!

Sure makes you feel violated, doesn't it?

I would contact the seller posing as an interested buyer & see what the scam is all about. Yikes! The thing about Craigslist is it really doesn't have the checks & balances that ebay does...scary!

Recently we saw a listing on eBay like that. But the buyer clearly stated the pictures of the trailer were not his trailer. He posted pictures from another web site saying that if you buy this trailer you could restore it to look like the trailer in the pictures. I can't believe anyone would buy a trailer with no pictures of it, only pictures of what it could be.

Its like buying a $2000 flamenco guitar on ebay without physically seeing it or hearing it!! But people still do!

Unbelievable !

I busted a guy on CL a few months ago when I clicked on his ad for a Mustang SVO for sale and saw pictures of my own car! I emailed him and read him the riot act, and he apologized profusely and said he didn't have any pictures of his at the moment, so he thought he would just grab some off the web. He fixed it and put the ad back up with pics of his own.

More disturbing to me recently has been people listing every SOB made by Thor as an AS. Now when I search for AS I get all these other white boxes 'made by Thor (Airstream)'!

CL is definitly buyer-beware territory!

MANY more web site hits later

So far, I have felt compelled to respond to four separate emails from people who wanted to look at my Airstream to advise them that someone else was misrepresenting their Airstream on craigslist. While I feel bad for the prospective buyers, I am pleased with the glowing sentiments people express about my Overlander, and the fact that they seem quite willing to pay the $12,500 price set by the miscreant who posted the ad.

Craigslist, in spite of me emailing them about the situation, has not altered the posting. This is unfortunate for prospective buyers.

OTOH, I would have thought that prospective Vintage Airstream owners would have discovered this forum first if he/she had considered acquiring an older unit.

P.T. Barnum's words echo in my mind...
