Any inspectors/repair experts willing to mentor newbies in NorCal?

My husband and I own a pop-up and want to move up to a trailer. After looking at far too many to count new and used trailers that were not Airstreams, we've realized that we really, really want to own a vintage AS. Hubby is an aircraft engineer with sheet metal and building experience, so we're up for a renovation project. However, I'm nervous about jumping in without knowing what we should be looking for, as in California, there are no ends of scams and RVs for sale that look great, but are actually a huge, huge, huge problem when you dig into them.

Frankly, if we got it for the right price and the tools we have, we could easily handle a trailer that had to be gutted entirely on the inside (including subfloor), but I'd prefer to not have to deal with rust in the frame and/or actually taking all the exterior skin off (removing one or two pieces to fix some damage would probably be manageable).

Thus, I'm wondering if there are any of the local inspectors/repair gurus/local owners who would be willing to take a couple hours and walk us through their trailer and show us what to look for and how to find it when we are looking on our own. We are in the North Berkeley Hills and would be happy to go out from us an hour or two if someone is willing to help us out.

We will happily provide compensation or thank you gift in return.

Thanks in advance!

Oops! Sorry I missed this! If you use this forum on a PC (not a smart phone) you can find a link for volunteer inspectors by state. It's best to search for them and sen them a private message - the odds the one person you want most is reading the forums when you need them can be slim! Good luck!!

Smokeyplaces-

There was a private northern California response.. Inspectors are local, and there is a way to access the list on main "Portal" page of Forum.. An inspector in California can't help someone in Ohio...

Alternatively, there are a number of threads you can search for here (using search tab in blue bar above, and key words..) on Inspection Checklist or Buying Used or What to Look For.. Some of them may be helpful for your own search to know how to look over a trailer that is for sale.. They cover everything from the ice pick through the floor to the appliance checks and propane and water leak tests...

We are still building out our database, but we should have inspectors with Airstream experience in your area shortly to help with your search. I'm sure someone would show you their trailer and give you tips, I'd gladly do that for someone local to Portland (with Streamlines obviously)

Good luck!
