Hi,

Bought our Airstream about a year ago and just received our reg and license fees from our beautiful state of California -- in excess of $800! We own a trailer park in Arizona but live in Ca. Considering we have an address in Arizona (and assuming these fees would be less there), I'm wondering if we can register/license the Airstream in Arizona? I've done some research on line and found it's difficult to get a simple answer. Has anyone done this and if so could you explain the process or provide a lead on how/if this can be done?

AZ is a personal property tax state and plates can be very high on newer items.

The big issue I would see is a TV license from CA and a AS license from AZ, plus a driver’s license from CA. Not sure how that would be looked at. But having said that this is why people are moving to lower taxed states. In WI my AS is $25 a year. Just have to put up with a temp of about 5 degrees for a Jan. 25th temp

arizona will charge you about 2% of market value. Market value is based off msrp with about 16% reduction year over year. On a $100,000 expect to pay $2000 the first year. Our 2019 Classic 33 was almost $3k, that in top of sales tax of almost 8%

Well, fundamentally, you are domiciled in California. If you find a way to register it in Arizona and the taxing authorities discover this, you may find they have zero sense of humor about it.

I bought a Cessna 150 in New Hampshire about 25 years ago. Flew it home to Miami. Within a week, got a tax bill from the State of Florida. States exchange data all the time about all kinds of things so it is not unlikely that California would become aware of your tax avoidance effort.

Ouch! I think if I had to pay that kind of plate taxes I would rethink owning an AS There does come a point.....

We have properties in two states (residence of only one of course). The non resident state is happy to have us register vehicles there - even with an out of state mailing address. So, our TV and trailer have different plates but fully legal.

I've never thought of Ontario as being a low tax jurisdiction however trailer registration is a one time fee of $72.

We're not trying to evade taxes or do anything illegal, just trying to find a way to lower costs. Probably the best way to find out is talk to the respective states DMV's, although, I can imagine this could open up a can of worms. I imagine we'll end up paying the bill. Thank you all for your responses.

In GA you pay a one time (significant) tax when you initially register a vehicle. After that it’s an annual tag fee which is pretty small.

On the other hand, property (real estate) taxes seem lower than what I hear people report from other states, although it will vary by county.

It's much easier to domicile if you sell your house and live in your AS full time. That's what we did, eventually establishing domicile in FL after being WA residents for 20 years. WA is fine for income tax (e.g. none), but registration can be "spendy," as they say up there. We used St. Brendan's Isle mail service to help us establish domicile in FL. All our mail goes to St. Brendan's service and then we forward it to wherever we happen to be.

One other thing: if you buy your health insurance on the exchange (ACA insurance), as we do, check on any potential residency requirements in SD before establishing domicile there. I've read elsewhere on the Forum that when it comes to ACA insurance, SD has some interesting requirements for the number of months actually spent in that state. We could be wrong about that, but it is worth a check.

You buy a toy for over $80k, and complain about a $800 bill?

Or worst, buy the cheapest thing you can find.

We do the same thing, but only for our AS. We want to keep our vanity plate from TX. The Plate itself is paid for 5 years so we want to renew it as long as we still own a house there but reside in NM. But geez... 800 bucks? That’s crazy. Our renewal is like $68, and I doubt NM is much different. Find a way to get it cheaper, like South Dakota. A lot of full timers get a mailing address there.

Illinois land of graft and high taxes RV fees are low. Annual tags lowest that AS qualifies for is $18.00 next up $38.00 no inspections or weighing req. weight is determined on title. My AS is supposed to be $18.00 but was lic. for $38.00 but title shows lesser weight. My new neighbor From Indiana stated his toy hauler & pu lic. very high plus pu inspection. In Il. A D lic. plate on pu has to be insp.every 6 mos. that is titled at 10,000 lbs. plus smog check if registered some areas of Il.

Most full time RVers live in South Dakota and Texas.

We looked into it when we bought our A/S to avoid the 6% sales tax in PA. We passed on it this time around since everything else we have is already registered in PA.

Do a few "Domicile" searches and see what you come up with.

Make up you own mind.
