Is the serial number on the plate, the same as the VIN #?

When I do an online VIN search it says it must be 17 numbers though [emoji848]

That is your Airstream's serial number. It serves the same purpose as the later 17 character VIN, which is to identify a specific Airstream.

VINs were not standardized to 17 digits until mid to late 1970s.

Airstream implemented the government mandated 17-character VIN for the 1981 model year. Some car makers may have implemented it in 1980.
