Do I take that to be S128 S6169?

It's an odd one, that's for sure! It doesn't match any of the 28' Ambassador VINs from 1960-1968 at Vintage Airstream Photo Archives. According to Frequently Asked Questions the Santa Fe Springs factory was closed at the end of 1968 production. Send us a picture of the wheelwell area and we would be able to tell you more. Is the bathroom curbside or roadside? These last two points would tell us California for sure.

The Airstream site looks to have this area of its FAQs down tonight. We have their files at http://www.airforums.com/forums/f238...hts-35742.html. Pre 1980 VINs are in post #9. Still no matches. It might be a custom but I'm not sure how those VINs were set up.

What is your bed arrangement?

I'm guessing pre-1967 (ie, 1966 or before)

Here's an approximation:
S = Santa Fe Springs
I = International
28 = length
5 = double bed layout (yes, a typo -- meant to be 5 and not an S)
6169 = maybe the last 3 #s are the sequential production numbers

I'd sure be interested in what Fred Coldwell (47WeeWind) says. Fred?

The first symbol looks like an "O", which is for a standard Airstream, not Landyacht or International. AKA a "base model".

No, it's an "S" all right. I blew it up and tried to get a better look. The first character is S. It looks like S122 (or 128) [space] S6169. The second S, well if that's a 5, the person that punched it on there must have been tippling...

CaptnMorgan: when you take a close up like that turn on the MACRO function of your camera. It's the one that has a little flower symbol. Makes for a LOT more clarity.

The DMV says this number does not show up on their database. The trailer has a rear bath.
Is this supposed to be the VIN? To the best of our knowledge, the trailer is supposed to be a 66 safari international.
