TX trailer inspection sticker

I've had my 23' Safari inspected twice now and I've just kept the inspection sticker in my travel book with all my other papers.

Where is the legal spot to stick it too? I've had people tell me on the rear and some say on police want to se it on the tongue.

Where does it need go?

Inspection sticker? All I've ever had on my RV's is a registration sticker on the license plate!
Hmmm..... Might learn something here!

They always put mine on the street side, either on the A-frame or next to the mfg. data and tire info., and I always pull it off as soon as I leave Texas.

They put mine on the street side of the A frame. On my old trailer it was on a window.

Virginia does an inspection once a year, and they use a sticky backed inspection sticker that goes on the road side of the tongue.

Now mind you I've seen people with stickers that are YEARS out of date or with no sticker at all that regularly tow on the highway.

Me... I'm a cop magnet. If I have a sticker that is ONE DAY out of date, I will get caught, so I keep mine up to date. Unfortunately there are few places that DO trailer inspections so it's always best to get them done early in the month before the crowds hit.

Thanks all, my 1st inspection wazs done at a little shade tree mechanic, at least that's what it looked like. Can't remember who gave me the recommendation, but they called around and many places were out of the 2011 stickers and this place had 1 left. Had to go quite a distance down some back road. The owner slowly got around to it. Funny thing is that he wanted the paperwork, looked out the window, said it'd be afew. So I waited in the TV and bout 15 minutes later he came to me with all the paperwork and the sticker and said it was $14.50. Gave him a 20 and he said it should be the last one I would need. So, off I went.

Well, I'm like Foiled. I'd rather pay my $14.50 every year then have a ticket for $250.

I called around my self and found Firestone does them 2 miles from my home. Actually did a light check and VIN check. Paid my $14.50 and I'm good for another year.

One place I called said any place that does motorcycles should do trailers cause it's the same sticker. I wouldn't know cause I don't have a cycle.

So now that I've learned something new, what do they look for in an inspection and where do I go to get it done?

Sorry not trying to hi-jack.

They mostly check the lights, and the VIN number if you are bringing it from out of state. And of course, the insurance on the tow vehicle, but the trailer does not require liability insurance. They should check the brakes and the condition of the tires, but I've never had them do that, and I've had two inspected that I bought out of state.

I know no one that gets them inspected anually, even though it's an actual state requirement, if the trailer weighs over 3500 lbs., I believe.

We had a Texas DPS officer come and give us a safety talk at a rally once, and he told us he'd never stopped an RV in his carrier, or checked a safety inspection on a trailer.

I tried to get a multi year sticker but the trailer has to be over 6000 GVW.

Yes, They do check the TV insurance, but not the trailer insurance.

I had my '72 inspected at the local white box RV dealer. They checked all the lights and went for a test drive to check the brakes. They placed the sticker on the street side stack window. I doubt that anyone would ever get a ticket in Texas for not having a current inspection sticker unless it was after an accident and a DPS officer was looking for some add on tickets. I was told that the fine for not having a current TX inspection was up to $200.

They put mine on the bottom forward streetside window. I take it to a local RV dealer. All he wanted to see was my TV insurance card and that the lights worked. He may have glanced at the tires if he looked at all. Was surprised he didn't check the brakes, particularly the breakaway switch.

Huh... finally a government loophole that's in my favor!

I don't have any old inspection stickers on the trailer and wasn't asked about it when I transferred the title, so I hadn't really thought about it nor had I sought official information on the topic until I read this thread.

I found that this is governed by Texas Transportation Code Chapter 548, and in section 052 it lists vehicles NOT subject to inspection, paragraph 3 says: a trailer, semitrailer, pole trailer, or mobile home having an actual gross weight or registered gross weight of 4,500 pounds or less;

Gotta love that "or" since they made a bit of an error on my title, apparently. Empty weight 3300, carrying capacity 200 (yup, just two hundred lb listed) for gross weight of 3500. I guess if I'm not polite in presenting the reason I'm not required to have an inspection, an officer might wonder why my trailer is over the supposed gross even at Airstream's optimistic zero-options weight of 3610 lb...

It's been my experience, and everyone's in my unit, that you will never be asked or checked for it. When I did get mine inspected, the guy handed me the sticker because he didn't even know where it was supposed to go....I threw it away.

I get mine checked every year. $14.50 vs. $250 is a no brainer. Where I get mine done, they told me they are looking at all lights working, proper safety chains and the break away switch working and tire tread depth. All the things we should check every time we make a trip. By the way they put my sticker on the front streetside stack window.

i transferred mine from out of state, and that required an inspection. My uncle owns a business that does trailer inspections and since mine needed some repairs before being inspected, I made sure to ask what needed to be working to pass inspection. If there's a light on the trailer, it has to work. also, the breakaway switch and brakes. My sticker is on the tongue.

I bought my 2002 ASCL 31' from CanAm RV in Canada. When I got back to Houston, being dumb an happy, I proceeded to title/register it, without any thought that it might require an inspection, and did so without any demand for an inspection.

I'm still happy, but not as dumb since I read this thread. I figure I've saved about $145.00 in inspection fees over the last 10 years so if I can just go another few years I may save enough to pay for any ticket I get .......... maybe this rationale still leaves me dumb, you suppose?

Ours did not have an inspection sticker when we bought it, in Texas. No request for one when we registered it in Texas. And this is the first I have ever heard about a law requiring it in Texas. Learn something new every day I guess. After reading the posts above about the varying degrees of actual inspection that is done, it is obviously not something that is being properly administered.. Sounds like a scam just to gain money for the state. (and not even a good one since they don't seem to enforce the requirement) Doubt I will play.

Thanks All,

I think I will put mine on my street side front window. Don't want to scrape it off the tongue I just painted nor the rock guard Plexi.
