Registration/Identification Help

Hi All,
I just joined this forum because I am acquiring a 1978 Sovereign 31' Land Yacht from my sister in law. According to the VIN number convention it might be a 1979. She acquired it through her boyfriend who has passed away. She doesn't need it and is giving it to my wife and I. It has been parked by a lake for the past 15 years. Other than the tires are disintegrated, it is in good shape.
I figure the most logical way to get this road legal is to register it, but I'm having issues tracking info down.
I am trying to get it road worthy and move it 2 hours away. There are no license plates on it, but I do have a VIN number. Since it is an odd VIN number convention from the past, none of the places on line will recognize it. I don't even know which state it was registered previously in. I'm assuming the boyfriend brought it to his place on the lake and never moved it again so didn't continue to register it.
Does anybody have any info on where I can track down any registration info from the VIN number. I'm not sure if it's OK to write the VIN number in this forum, but if somebody needs it I can get it to them.

At least in most places, you need a title before you play with registration. Yes, that's a picky point. I'm guessing that both the title and registration are missing. First question would be: where was it when the boyfriend had it ( = what state )? That's as good a guess as any in terms of where to start looking for the title.

This almost sounds like mission impossible. If your sister in law can't produce a will, or a clear title in her name, or some other proof of ownership, she can't give the boy friend's trailer away seems to me. The trailer is parked on his property and their may be other claims to it. You may need an experienced lawyer to see if this mess can be straightened out. Of course I am not close to the situation.

These Airstream Forums have a serial number decoder. So if you post the exact VIN, folks here can identify the model year and model based on the info you post.

I bet it will be a long while before anyone gets possession of this trailer.
