Permanent trailer license?
I have heard through the grapevine that the state of Michigan now offers a permanent trailer license for around $200 as opposed to the annual license fee. Does anyone have info on this? Are any other states following suit?
I'm not sure that this would benefit me (39 years old in Jack Benny years) but younger folks might save some money and time
and hassle if the permanent option is available in their state.

Yo happy82301
How much is that fee? Is it transferable to a different trailer?
I'm just looking for info on alternatives to annual licensing. I squeeze a nickel so tight that the buffalo has to relieve him/herself.

Roger .. 25 or 30 Canadian dollars
Cheaper in Canadian dollars and yes it is transferable to another trailer.. just a small fee for the paper work..

Way cool
Here in the good old USA, we would welcome (I think) a permanent fee, especially if it's transferable.
Those of us who change Airstream TT's or MH's nearly as often as we change our socks would certainly benefit from such a license.

Happy, what do you do if you have more than one trailer? Register each one for life?

I wonder if a vintage airstream would qualify as a collectable or antique? Good question to ask the tax and tag office.

CALIFORNIA HAS 'EM !
My AS cost me a whole $21, and that's for 5 years.
Personally, I think the DMV girl thought it was a utiity trailer- but I wasn't going to ask too many questions!!

CA License
I am waiting for my new 25' CCD to come in and the dealer told me that the registration in CA was 2% of the total cost.
Does this sound right? If it does, how long is the plate good for?

Although we left CA about five years ago, that sounds about right. I recall that registrations in the Golden State are outrageously expensive. We were paying something like $450/year for our car registration, moved to Iowa and it dropped to $85 or something. Just another reason NOT to live in CA!

I went to Ohio Historical Plates on my Airstream. You qualify if the vehicle is at least 25 years old. Mine cost $19.75. They are not permenent, mine expire in 2050. I doubt the plate itself will last that long.

Re: Permanent trailer license?
In Minnesota we do not have a permanent trailer license, however I just paid my annual fee which came to a whopping $8!

Trailer license
Yes, michigan is going to a permanent license to raise immediate cash for balancing the state budget. $75 for small <2000# trailers and $200 for anything bigger. You will get a new tag with a "permanent" description. Anyone who thinks it would be transferable knows nothing about state government and your wallet.

Tax-a-chusetts
In good ole Tax-a-chusetts, we are charged an annual fee based on trailer length. My trailer is 19' which translates into an annual fee of $65. Yet another reason to move out of state!

In response to Creampuff, Calif has permanent plates for open utility trailers, but definitely NOT for Airstreams... Bake a plate of cookies for your DMV Clerk, 'cause her confusion saved you several hundred $$. We registered an '89 Excella 25 in August purchased from out of state, and paid over $1,000 in use taxes and fees to license... It will be several hundred $$ per year unless a new governor and legislature make some changes...

Ohio has raised their plate fees by $11.45. I got new plates for the new truck last week, and they don't use raised letters on the plates anymore. The license plate looks "fake", like it is made out of plastic. Pay more, get less!
