Out-of-state Purchase help/guidance

Hey folks,

I'm new here so I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right category. I live in California and I'm in the process of buying an airstream located in Florida.

I'm hiring someone to bring the trailer to CA, however, I plan to register it in South Dakota. The Airstream is currently registered in FL and the tags expired in Dec 2020. I'm concerned about towing the trailer to CA without a license plate on. How should I handle the transaction? Should I have the trailer registered in SD before leaving FL? Should I have the seller get a temporary registration of some sort? Should I get a temporary SD registration so that it can be towed to CA?

Any insight on how to best handle the transaction will be greatly appreciated. This is new territory for me.

Thank you!

Alex

Legally, it’s my understanding that you’ll need to get it insured, have the title, a bill of sale and then purchase a temporary registration or an in-transit permit at the DMV in FL (I believe).

When you buy from a dealer they take care of the temp registration for you (I bought in NJ and drove back home to Colorado before I registered in CO).

I’m sure others with more experience will chime in....
