Do I have a 63 or 64?

Hello everyone I just purchased an old tradewind that the owner said was a 64 but I believe it may be 63 but trying to figure out the numbers is making me nuts. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What does it say it is on the title? The serial number looks like a '64.

The serial number S02442-1007 indicates you have is the 7th 1964 24' Tradewind Twin built in the California factory in July 1963 (6307). The 1964 California serial numbers were in a frequent state of flux for the first dozen or so trailers of each model, so that serial number format of your trailer does not match what is typical for a 1964 California built 24' Tradewind, but there is no doubt that is what you have.

It decodes as follows:
  • S = Santa Fe Springs Plant (this was soon dropped and apparently added to trailers from Jackson Center instead)
  • 0 = Land Yacht trim level
  • 24 = 24' Tradewind (soon dropped)
  • 4 = 1964 Model year
  • 2 = Twin Bed Layout
  • 1 = ??? (changed to a 4 to indicate 24' Tradewind when the "24" was dropped)
  • 007 = Sequence number, i.e. the 7th one built as they started at 001

Thanks so much everyone for sharing your knowledge with a rookie. I still have a lot to learn but I am really excited to start breathing life back into her. Does anybody know if they kept records on how many of each model at each site was made?

A complete set of Airstream production records do not exist for all years at each plant, but some do exist, including 1964 California. The last 1964 24' Tradewind built in California was serial number 042S4200, but there were a few canceled orders along the way, so the total number built was a little less that 200 1964 24' Tradewinds in the California plant. Records do not exist for Ohio in 1964, so we can only guess that a similar amount, maybe slightly more since it was a slightly larger plant, were also built in Jackson Center that year.

I also noticed an error in my earlier serial number decoding for your trailer. The leading "S" on your serial number was moved to the position you see in the last serial number above. It was not "dropped" as I previously noted.
