"26" = 25' Overlander
"D" = Double Bed (as opposed to twin beds)
"SS" = Santa Fe Springs
"6098" = production serial number (are you sure it is not "0698", which would fall in the proper range of 0554 to 0728?, if so, it is the
145th 1962 Overlander built in that plant)

I'm not sure that's making the most sense to me. Why a 28 prefix for a California-produced Airstream that year? SS = Santa Fe Springs, the location of the plant. And the sequential production number (last 4 digits) doesn't seem quite right. Hmm...

I think the "28" for California trailers on that page is just a typo and should be "26". I answered the serial number above. If my guess is not right, perhaps the production worker accidentally swapped the digits when punching them into the plate.
