Decipher VIN for 62 Overlander

We just purchased a 1962 26ft Overlander.

The VIN is 26DSS6098. Then below that number was 6205. Which I know is the date it was made, May of 1962. But can someone help me with the rest of the information.

Thanks!
M.R.

The 26 says it`s an ohio trailer,but the ss means Ca. trailer,I`ll just bump it till an expert gets on here. Dave

See the VIN sample at the upper left corner of 62Overlander

I'm not sure that's making the most sense to me. Why a 28 prefix for a California-produced Airstream that year? SS = Santa Fe Springs, the location of the plant. And the sequential production number (last 4 digits) doesn't seem quite right. Hmm...

"26" = 25' Overlander
"D" = Double Bed (as opposed to twin beds)
"SS" = Santa Fe Springs
"6098" = production serial number (are you sure it is not "0698", which would fall in the proper range of 0554 to 0728?, if so, it is the 145th 1962 Overlander built in that plant)

I think the "28" for California trailers on that page is just a typo and should be "26". I answered the serial number above. If my guess is not right, perhaps the production worker accidentally swapped the digits when punching them into the plate.

Yep, Joe, I thought of the 0698 transposition and the 28 typo made the most sense. I was glad to defer to someone with real vintage chops...

You are correct... We picked up the trailer today and the plate on the trailer is 0698. The title has the typo VIN.
