Well.... just got our insurance renewal from Progressive and our rates went from $156/mo to $229/mo or a 47% increase, no doubt from the claim. I might start shopping around.

Ouch! That is nuts. Please let us know if you find a better alternative. We’re shopping for an Airstream right now and one of the items on the to-do list is lining up insurance. Progressive was going to be my first call based in this thread….

I just now went to the Good Sam site and got referred to an agent who quoted around $150/mo, replacement cost, and $1,000 deductible with National General. I think they are owned by Allstate. We had them with our dearly departed Bambi but we never had a claim, so not sure how good they are. They were good at taking our money, but I'm ok with that even if we never make another claim.

That seems out of line. We had a $2500 claim with Progressive on a different Airstream a few years back and our rates didn't increase at the time.

On our current 2020 25' GT the rate with Progressive actually declined slightly this past year. We're now paying $709/year for a declared value of $125,600 (we added our solar/battery upgrade to the valuation) $0 deductible collision and comprehensive. We have AAA so no roadside assistance and no personal effects coverage.

It's very surprising that there's that much difference between rates in Minnesota and California.

Thanks, I'll contact them for an explanation. The claim was $3,700 and we have a $1k deductible, so not too much difference from yours. Good idea to add the solar/battery to the value too, I forgot about that.

When my AS is hitched to my truck it is covered by the policy on my TV. When it is parked in the barn it is covered by my HO insurance. Why pay more money to the leeches (excuse me, the insurance company) ?

We had to do some work on our ‘23 FC 30FB, covered by National General. The adjuster was friendly and prompt, but when it came time for the Airstream of Colorado dealership and National General to work together, that’s where things got testy. Worked out in the end, but the negotiation took a lot of time and at one point AS told me they’d personally cover whatever NG declined to pay for (NG pushed for me to use a “recommended” non-AS shop).

I asked the service center when we picked up the rig which insurers were easiest to work with from their perspective and the first and most emphatic answer was State Farm. Just got a quote and it was very competitive, so we’ll be switching when our term ends.

I sympathize with your sentiments regarding insurance in general. However, while some auto policies may cover liability while you're towing your trailer most don't cover collision or comprehensive damage to the trailer itself. Maybe yours is an exception.

Homeowner's policies usually require a rider to the policy if you want to cover a trailer or boat parked on your property. Of bigger concern to me is to have damage or theft coverage on the trailer when it's parked somewhere while camping, not while it's sitting at home.

Well... I have to wait until Monday, but I might see the issue and maybe a lesson. We ran over a curb shortly after we got the trailer and it bent an axle. I contacted Progressive to see if it was covered and filled out a claim form. It turned out Dexter covered the axle under warranty and I withdrew the claim.

It appears they counted this as an incident on our driving record (it's listed in the renewal documentation). So, we have two incidents in one year. The first they are supposed to forgive. Anyways, that's my hypothesis; I'll see what they say. Lesson: don't contact the insurance company unless you know for sure you're filing a claim (everyone probably knows this but me).

I had a chat with Progressive, they said since we had the claim my spouse lost her good driver discount and there was also a rate increase in our area, but mostly it was the accident/attack by a construction barrel. I asked about the "accident forgiveness" on the policy and it applies on payouts of up to $500, in other words, minor scratches.

We're headed to JC in 10 days, so we'll have them fix it and see if there are any other charges over the estimate that Progressive pays. Then it's time to switch to National General or someone.

So, I guess next time (hopefully there isn't one), I'll see what the damage is before making a claim and maybe be more self-insured.

FWIW, when we got a quote from State Farm, the difference in premium between a $500 and $1,000 deductible on comprehensive was $300/yr. Not insubstantial! We obviously went with the higher deductible.

I hadn't considered State Farm and gave them a call. They quoted $629/yr with $1,000 deductible, full replacement cost. Compared to $1,400/yr or more, it was in the too good to be true category. I questioned the agent on coverages, multiple drivers, that we made a claim on our current policy, etc. I couldn't find any holes. The only thing she said was that they don't cover possessions, which she said is covered under most homeowners' policies, so I need to check that out. In any case, I signed us up. Thanks for the State Farm reminder!

FWIW -

Owner I ran into said they had their previous AS trashed by hail. 'The Hartford' paid them what they paid for it. Not sure on the year but I believe a late model. I'm looking hard at them now for a 'bundle' deal.

I am getting a similar quote ($635/year) from Progressive with $1K deductible. This is for a 2018 Flying Cloud 19’ Bambi. Your $629 is for a 2023 25’ Globetrotter!?

I think I will be checking State Farm…

Yes, for the 2023 GT. I also confirmed with our regular insurer (USAA) that they cover liability under auto and possessions under homeowners. So, I'm wondering why the trailer insurers sell this coverage as add-ons (well, I know why), but from my understanding it's unnecessary.

Interesting (we’re with usaa too). Is this how you got the coverage so cheap from State Farm? And did you get your quote on-line, or did you have to use a local agent? Thanks.

You need coverage for the trailer itself in the event of an accident, fire, theft etc. I also think there are limitations as to how much liability is extended to the trailer from the auto policy and under what conditions it’s extended.
