I just got my renewal for the trailer's policy in the mail today, and it included the following Important Notice - They will no longer cover bodily injury or damage to the vehicle resulting from

THE INTENTIONAL OR ACCIDENTAL DETONATION OF, OR RELEASE OF RADIATION FROM, ANY NUCLEAR OR RADIOACTIVE DEVICE

Once we stopped laughing - because frankly if anyone detonates a nuclear device I think contacting state farm for reimbursement of our trailer will be the furthest thing from our minds - I thought man, that's really sad that they feel there is enough of a risk of that happening that they'd better exclude covering it now.

Damn! I just placed and order with Gustov for some plutonium for that little firecracker home built atom bomb I was building for the 4th of July to take top honors for loudest bang! Guess I better cancel my order.

Back when I was a Weather Observer in the Air Force, we had what was called a NUDET report. NUclear DETination.

We had to report

1. The flash to bang time. (Gives the distance from where you are standing, doncha see)

2 Using a clinometer, measure the angle to the base and top of the mushroom cloud. (can figure the height of the cloud knowing the angles and distance, doncha know)

3. If you haven't been vaporized yet, then encode and transmit that information over the teletype network. (which of course is impervious to nuclear blast, radiation and so on...)

Never did have to make a report and I am not sure if I could have done what with needing to change my drawers and all.

Doncha just love the insurance companies. They are supposed to CYA not theirs.

We haven't recieved this notice from state farm yet but I guess we should expect it any day.....

We live at the edge of the Hanford nuclear reservation where the "bomb" was developed and assorted nuclear work still continues. They still host evac and emergency drills around here.

My State farm agent lives here too..... do you suppose he's got special dispensation?

Guess I am screwed then...I live next to one of the largest military complexes (Fort Bragg, Pope AFB, Simmons AAF) and near a nuclear power plant.

Oh well if I see the flash I am dead anyway...what a way to go.

BTW, we live 40 miles from the only nuclear power plant in Iowa... hmmm...

We live near a mothballed reactor that is parked 50 miles north of the city off Lake Michigan. Still has a huge pool of spent rods waiting to be sent to Yucca Mountain once the lawsuits are done. Of course we are within 75-150 miles of several in the area.

I myself am wary of nuclear power, but in all honesty outside of the high level radioactive waste and the possibility of human error (folks not following directions), it really is a great source of energy. It's cheaper to buy the power from someone else than fix the reactors up. Before the NRC pulled specific info off their website post 9/11, I seem to recall that most of the reactors in the US are between 25-35 years old. Most of them had a production life of about 30 years and have been extened. The mothballed one has been mothballed for about 4 or 5 years now. If it were still in use today, it would be 44 years old and in use.

How safe is that? We'll if you're Commonwealth Edison here in the Chicago area....the odds were in the past that it was not a very safe bet.

Think I'd feel safer with that kid next door!

I don't know if there is any fuel still there but Georgia Tech has a Reactor right in the middle of down town Atlanta that at one time was working. it's from the 50's

I live just a few miles from NAS Atlanta and Lockheed. Would not surprise me in the least if there was not a reactor there. There is a underground hanger there. They do have a power plant that can run the base and Lockheed.

They send the nukes I know where my house is will be a glass desert.

Tech will also be targeted. They do a lot of military research on campus. I managed to be in the right place at the right time and got the tour of the design prototype of the Patriot missle system targeting system test mule. Installed a car phone for one of the head professors on the design team. It was raining so he pulled his car into the building and was very proud to tell me what that semi trailer with all the wires hanging out of it was that I was working next too.

I also installed a phone for a VERY nerdy little dude down there. Not sure what his gig was but lots of pass codes to get into his building and lots of people who just twiddled thumbs and watched doors. Most of them didn't look "Civilian". This guy was a Gaget freak with expensive gagets for the time. Drove of all things a 1972 4 door nova. He was testing out Data ability before I could get the car the rest of the way together...this was 17 years ago.

That's just junk I know about first hand...I wonder what I don't know about. LOL.

World is not as simple as it seems. There are things that most people are blissfully unaware of. Might has well enjoy that bliss cause there is not much you can do to change it.

We figure when the sirens go off it's probably too late. I'm getting a tumbler of the best single malt in the cupboard and climbing up on the roof to watch the light show (being mindful of course to walk only on the frame members).

A bit drastic and cheap jab don't ya think? My guess is all the suitcase bomb stuff has been resurfacing a lot lately. Although there have been staunch denials that they ever existed....I doubt very much that they don't exist.

My guess is that since the breakup of the Soviet Union, and the proliferation from Pakistan that has recently come to light, I think those would be far better guesses than simply slamming Bush. Just my opinion though.
