"If needed" towing of my trailer

We're embarking on a six weeks trip to Utah from Virginia. Does anyone have recommendations for insurance that I can get that would cover the towing of my AS to a safe port in case of problems with my TV ? Thanks for any help.

Good Sam sells an RV Towing and Assistance Policy. I think the first year is about $120. I've had it about 6 years now. Only called them twice - once to fix a flat and once to jump start the TV after the battery suddenly failed. They were prompt and it was painless.

I have coverage through my auto carrier. TT is insured (less than $6/month for value) TT is covered for liability through my TV insurance (for which I also have roadside coverage: $6/month).

Don't pay extra for something you may already have...

You should be aware... Not all "tow" services are equal. The Good Sam will ensure a proper tow is sent, i.e.; flatbed trailer instead of "tow hook", tow guys specialized in "RV" TT recovery.

They will "tow" to a location which knows RV systems. At least it states that in the fine print ( in more words of course). They will send you a copy of the policy before you sign!!!

Good Sam? I'm skeptical.

I think Good Sam is living off of it's old reputation - they certainly seem to be much more into deluging customers with mailed offers for all sorts of standard senior crap than actually SERVING their customer base. But how is that different from my bank, and three dozen other companies that do the same thing - it's called cross-selling and up-selling.

It's hard to decide which junk mail irritates me more - AARP or Good Sam. (I've fallen and I can't get up because I'm lying under a 95 lb. recycling container of their junk mail!)

No Auto Club owns it's tow truck fleet. (AAA seems to but only in major metropolitan areas.) They ALL have approved contractors that do their towing - and more and more to be an approved contractor the major qualification seems to be "fogs a mirror" and is dumb enough to be the low bidder on the contract with the auto clubs. In this area the same company tows for 4 different auto clubs including Good Sam - they just switch magnetic signs on the doors.

In the call center/answering service industry tow truck companies are on the short list of "toxic waste clients". There ARE very good ones, who are a pleasure to work with, but they do not dominate the industry.

I don't have Good Sam Roadside Assistance and some day I'll probably regret that, but if I ever need another towing company in an unfamiliar area - I will call and ask if they can tow a tractor trailer or a loaded cement truck. Those are the ones that are well established, well financed and generally hire drivers with a modicum of common sense - since these companies work a LOT of police calls.

PS - McDermott Towing company in Mount Vernon IL that towed my wrecked A/S in 2013 was STELLAR! Mom is the disptacher, two sons drive, and the rest of the drivers are family friends and classmates - LOVE small town businesses with that kind of ethic and history.

We use AutoCkub by adding RV/Motorcycke coverage. We've only needed them once--they were prompt, courteous and knowledgeable.

AAA all the way for me:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/...ow-132673.html

Very low cost, great service. There's something about Good Sam that I find really irritating. Maybe their spam based marketing and deceptive mailers.

Cheers,
John

The AAA towing coverage was an extra $39.00 a year. Our 95 mile tow a few days ago would have cost $665.00 without it.

Cheers,
John

Thanks everyone. I did just extend my AAA coverage with their RV package. Cost about $50 additional for the year. I will still have to be diligent about the towing service should I need it....hope not !

AAA RV coverage. They will send a truck to tow the trailer and a flat bed for the TV, which is what I require. I did see one flat bed put the Chevy TV on the truck and then hook the Airstream up to the tow truck. Worked fine. Guy was back in the campground two days later and said all went fine.

I have used AAA, Allstate and currently Good Sam. I've had good experience with all but my best experience is with GS. One time my TV broke down along a highway 35 miles from our rally destination. They sent 2 tow trucks, one to tow our trailer to our destination and another to take our car to a repair shop. We canceled when I was able to make emergency repairs and continued on to our rally. I received a call from GS a few hours later to ask if we made our trip safely.....a nice 'touch' I'd say. A few years later the same TV left us stranded in a major intersection. Then a flat bed for our car and the trailer in tow attached to the flatbed. They towed us to a repair shop for the car then to a nearby Walmart for the trailer. The only gripe I had was with the repair.....2 days to locate the problem, a failed coil.
