Thumbs up Canadian Trailer Insurance

Hi Folks,

Just received my renewal insurance from Aviva Elite (Wayfairers) and thought I would do a little comparison shopping. Good thing I did.

Aviva Elite was asking for $950.00, which is about what I have paid for the past 5 years with no claims.

Echelon General Insurance (a subsidiary of the co-operators) is charging . . . $532.00 for the same coverage. Guess which one I am going with?

You owe it to yourselves to check around.

hi kam'

this is true, but are u SURE the coverage is identical?

did you request a copy of the complete policy to read and compare?

even if u have the same riders, HOW those riders are worded and what REALLY is covered can only be determined by reading them.

do you have any info on how either company handles or denies claims?

have u shopped other providers for price?

which of these 2 is out of line compared to MOST other quotes?

be sure you don't over pay, but be equally sure you aren't under covered.

cheers

I'd also check the fine print starting with the coverage. If you buy your trailer new, Aviva will cover the (new) replacement cost of the trailer, no cap. Other insurance carriers operate like auto insurers and only cover the depreciated cost of the trailer, which in the case of an Airstream could be down 50% after a few years.

From the premiums quoted, I'd guess Echelon is in the latter group.

We have the trailer insurance with the same company (AAA) that covers our cars. Very happy with the premium and the fact that just one company is involved if there is a claim while towing.

For me with my vintage trailer Aviva was the best priced, offered the best coverage, and were willing to insure it for an agreed to replacement/payout amount equal to what I could show them they were selling for on eBay, which at the time I'd found a few in the 10 to 12K range. So we agreed to 12K and that's what my premium is based on. I'm happy with that, and pay $128/yr in addition to the basic license and insurance I'm required to purchase from the BC provincial insurance company ($58/yr).
