Your Opinion, Asking $ 22,500.00

What do you think? Advertised in Sunny South Florida ... 1996 Airstream Excella 1000 25' TT for $ 22,500.00. Looks to be in good shape. Has rear twin beds. How would you compare that to somewhere around $ 42k for a brand new 2004 Classic 25?

Thanks.

Average retail $15,880 + $650 for the Excella 1000 package according to NADA.

Keeping in mind that you can always come back with a higher offer, but, will never have an opportunity to backtrack and go lower ...

If you were interested in this particular unit, what price would you use to start the negotiations?

Well the price noted is average retail, so that means some sell for more some sell for less. What you need to do is inspect the unit, check out the appliances to verify their operation, see if it holds water pressure, look for water leaks, floor rot etc. From the results you then make your offer. If it is tip top offer more. Keep in mind that the average retail will be close to what your insurance company will offer if you have a loss so keep that in mind when you make your final and best offer.

The biggest mistake most folks make is not making sure everything works. For example a bad refrigerator will set you back big $$ so have the owner turn it on a few hours before you get there. You will know nothing if they turn it on when you get there. A 1996 trailer should be on its second set of tires, is it? If not you will be spending another $400. Factor these types of issues into your offer.

It seems to me that NADA is very low for clean, used Airstreams. Where are the '96 Excellas being sold for $16,500? I don't think you will find one.

Well, at least for automobiles, those numbers come from dealer's (and acutioneer's) sales data. I can't imagine that they would gather the statistics for trailers any differently. The price of a certain vehicle isn't set by some subjective judgement, like some guy saying "oh, that should be worth about x".

Most of the trailers that we have looked at in the past were averaging in the 15% to 20% range above NADA. Do your homework on the frontend and then give it your best price.
