New member. We are excited to join the Airstream community!
We are looking at purchasing a used 2021 30RB Queen from a dealership. We had an independent certified inspector do a pre-purchase inspection. There are a couple of issues that were found that we don't know how big of a deal they are and how they impact value / resale and are trying to figure out (a) if they would impact our long-term use and enjoyment, and (b) what a fair price is given these defects.
(1) There was one large-ish dent & scrape on the door side near the back and multiple superficial / minor scratches throughout (mainly at the back). Pictures attached. None of them penetrate the shell or would allow any water intrusion, so they are purely esthetic. But to remove the dent would require the entire door side lower panel of aluminum to be replaced. We can live with the scratches and dent, but just don't know what a fair value to pay would be and how it would impact resale.
(2) The inspector noted the frame has accumulated a substantial amount of rust and recommends a frame conditioning treatment to prevent further corrosion and grime buildup. Pictures from the report attached. We don't know how big of a deal is this, how hard is it to treat, or if it is has any structural or long-term impacts we are unaware of (if we treat it now and maintain it), and what a fair value to pay would be.
(3) The trailer was used mid-year 2021 to mid-year 2022 and has been sitting on the dealer lot for over a year (close to a year and a half). We believe it did not sell because of the dent. It appears none of the normal maintenance was done during that period (hence dead batteries, the rust build-up, some stuck windows / seals as we were going through, etc.). We are not sure how concerned we should be and what we should pay particular attention to then.
This is our very first trailer purchase (Airstream or otherwise). We are not afraid of work, but want to make sure we are not being taken advantage of and that we will have a good, reliable trailer for a long time to come. There are a few other issues that the dealership would be required to fix for us to move forward, but these are the ones that we would need to deal with "as is" if we move forward with the deal.
- What would be a fair price? What price would make you feel great about the deal? JD Powers states an average sale price of $110K, with a low of $91K (I believe both before taxes and fees). A 2023 new with warranty looks to cost $116-125K before taxes and fees.
- Are there any deal breakers here that we really need to pay attention to? How big of a deal is the rust and that it has sat for over a year without use?
- Are there other things we should consider?
Thank you!
