Need cash

Thinking about trading in 05 Safari 25 FB on a 1987 Soveriegn 28 foot. Getting the 87 and cash for the 05, stupid idea? Really need a few thousand and want to stay with AS. No money discussed yet. Opinions please. Jim

If you are trading, any dealership will likely want to value your trade in low and the product you want high. They want to make a profit out of your deal - and not just a couple of hundred bucks.

The loss you will take on the deal is an expensive way to get access to "a few thousand" as you say. I would personally check out a lot of other options first before what you are suggesting (bank loan?).

If I were in your position, I would sell my tow vehicle privately for the best dollar I could, keep the AS and just buy a less expensive tow vehicle - or save up and buy a similar tow vehicle again later.

I would think you would get more for your '05 selling it yourself. My rig is an '82 and I am very happy with it. If the '87 you are looking at is in good shape you might do well in the deal if you can get a decent price on it.

Could work. I use a 2000 F150 with a 4.2L V6 stick shift to tow a similar trailer to yours. It is not as fast as the 3/4 ton up the mountain but is a great TV.

If your 2005 is paid for, you might be able to refinance it through your credit union to free up some cash. Not sure this is a good long term solution, but it is an alternative.

Best bet IMHO is going to be, sell the current Airstream, then buy the 1987 you want. No dealer is going to be able or want to give you the kind of cash you are looking for. They are in the business to make money, not give it away on reverse deal.

You are probably correct. If I try this I will let you know how it works out. Jim

Jim, be careful that you don't wind up buying the older trailer and then dumping a bunch of $$ into it to make it camp-ready. The difference in values (probably near $10k) makes up for quite a few repairs, but spending several thousand to bring the 28' up to snuff would eat into that. Same with sales tax.
