NADA Values are too low for Flying Cloud

NADA values are also low for cars and trucks and when you are trading in a vehicle, dealers will show you the NADA values. I show them Edmunds and Kelly's Blue Book's values which are generally higher as well as newspaper ads (theirs are best). When I checked the NADA value for my Airstream it was about 40% of what I got for it when I sold it. I had two buyers at the same time, so I should have asked for a bit more.

NADA is a dealers' organization and simply does what dealers want. If you buy a used car from them, they won't show you the NADA book.

Banks loaning on an RV probably know very little about them and getting used vehicle values on RV's requires a lot of research. Just looking at NADA is easy—RV loans are a small part of their business. Insurance companies have more experience with RV's, but they only want premiums and do not want to pay damages so they will use NADA. It often requires fighting with all of them to get what you deserve.

I use AARP's insurance, The Hartford. I told them what the trailer was worth over the phone, '97 Safari, added $2,000.- and they gave me a quote. No hassles.

There was a roughly $10,000.- claim for bodywork for the replacement of 3 outside panels the insurance company took care of, no problem. They did come in a little lower than the AS dealer wanted but the insurance co. quickly came up with the right amount.

This topic drifted a bit, so I will just add my relevant insurance experience. We have a policy with Allstate, and the coverage is $77,000 for replacement of our 2017 20' FC FB if totaled. I asked about how they determine that since we paid $61,000 +tax/lic. Apparently the policy will buy a new replacement because it is a recent year model and reducing our coverage to what we paid would not save that much anyway. Imagine we will have to review the terms every year to see exactly what the coverage is.

I bought my 2013 20' FC BAmbi for $44,400 last year. It is insured for $59,000 replacement value.!

Given none of us put any faith in the NADA, KBB, or Edmunds numbers then what is an acceptable means of estimating modern trailer values for models 2010 and newer?

I completely agree that appraisal services are the right course for vintage trailers or establishing value for insurance policies, but before contracting for such a service what is the current thinking around pricing or depreciation?

When we sold our Airstream, I checked what people were asking on the Forum. You can see like trailers tend to cluster around a price point and when they sell, you can get an idea what yours is worth. You can also check listings of trailers for sale by dealers, especially the larger ones. Those may be inflated considerably compared to what people actually pay. However, convincing an insurance company is another thing. I suspect insurers will accept dealer prices more often than the asking prices on the Forum.

I hope that Allstate rv ins is better than home owners. Last fall our area had severe hail damage roofs and sides all were damaged. All homes were fixed except very few by Allstate, claimed not enough damage to fix even tho you could see heavy dents in sidings and shingles large pock marks even some missing.
