Too much for an all original trailer. You can bet that any system on a unit this old is suspect to fail at any moment. While the trailer does appear to be in good condition, I would think 8000 to 12000 dollars is more realistic.

It sounds high.
What do you have in mind when shopping for a trailer?
Travel?
A stationary unit?
How many people and pets will use the unit at the same time? Number and type of beds for example.
This unit has a small black water tank and no grey water tank. Which will limit the "off grid" use. Meaning it is more akin to being used where full hookups are available.
While the small black water tank and non existence of a grey water tank can be overcome with modification or the use of tote(s). One should be aware of these issues.

My 76 AS that I pur new 1977. I replaced carpeting, drape 2 times, convertor 2 times, 2 water pumps, furnace and axles, new awnings all around, other wise all orig. no dents or damage except lft. front banana wrap that was rolled out [can not ever tell damaged] no extras or geegaws attached. Very low miles less than 20,000 was recently appraised at $18.000 and ins. this amt. so IMO $8,000 max but people that want will pay whatever asking price

The ad shows 1978 AS. 1978 Has large black and gray tank not 74 as your argosy has.

I wouldn't touch it for more than $8000. $6,000 is more like it. Probably needs (or soon will need) new tires, axles, and all sorts of other stuff. $18,000 is way too high given the photos and description.

I wonder if the tires are in great shape because they haven't rolled in 20 years.....

Misread the ad. Thought it was a '73. Even at that the price seems high.

Sounds like it could be "I hope I can get this for the trailer" price. Take a look at the Forums on this site and get an idea for values for age & condition. To the points made above it is hard to figure out what it's worth because you can't really see what's been updated, repaired (properly or that may have to be repaired again). There are issues that begin to present over time - the copper tubing for the water supply deteriorates over time even if it's been faithfully winterized. Look for an upgrade to PEC. The water heater tank will rust and be leaking by now - these are not fun nor easy (therefore not cheap) to replace and people will bypass the water heater to avoid it leaking into the trailer. The refer will run forever (mine is still running great and it's almost 50 years old) as long as it was cared for. If it's the original Armstrong A/C check the compressor - it will run the fan but the compressor may not kick in and actually cool. The water pump is probably no longer working. All this before you get to holding tanks not leaking, floors solid with no soft spots from water, bent axles, tires, brakes, elec & gas / LP system integrity ....

Bottom line - if it's been maintained and updated and is ready to roll then maybe it's a bargain, but when I watch time capsules get open on TV the contents are usually sodden with moisture and are generally no longer usable

Does anyone know if someone is tracking the asking price and or selling price of vintage Airstreams. I see a lot of very high asking prices but most of the time they are on the market a long time and we never know what they sell for. If you find one priced well it's gone as soon as it's listed.

IMO most people value their old airstream to high. 20k should get you an updated vintage trailer, not original. Original 70's and 80's trailer should be in the 10k and below range, as there is a lot of updating and replacing of worn out items involved. Case in point there is a local ad for a $2k 79 Excella. Gutted in the fact everything has been ripped out and stored in the trailer, and the a frame is actually rusted through and cannot be towed. Decent shell. I offered $500 and was told I don't know what vintage is worth. But there is a sucker born every minute...
