Is it worth it - 1995 Classic Unlimited

We have found a 1995 Airstream and on the back it says "Classic" and on the side panel it says "Unlimited". We are going to look at in on Saturday but was told it has no soft floors nor water leaks. He want 20 grand for it and I have known he for many years and trust him but verify. I don't want to over pay nor do I want to take advantage of a friend

It also has 400 watts of solar, 2500 watt inverter and couple of AGM with new tires.

Here are some pictures he sent me.

That trailer looks to be in excellent condition. Airstreams are very expensive right now. Yes, my guess ( and it is just a guess) is that trailer is well "worth it". I would still budget some money for fixes or replacements of appliances though.

We want to make this a family project between my step son and grand kids (20 and 24 years old). Don't know if should be a restore project or total update including painting the cabinets white or gray and redoing the two beds in the back into one queen size bed.

Our two older trailers are twin bed and that is why we picked them. So that is a featue I liked about it. I have learned to live with the brown oak interior. Lots of LED lights help remove some of the darkness. We put led bulbs in all the 12 volt lights and then added some led 110 lights and a couple of bright circular led 12 volt fixtures.

In my opinion, this is the bargain of the year. There are not that many 95 and newer Excellas on the market right now. Most are priced at $30,000 plus if they are in any kind of decent condition. I check every day in a forum classifieds, airstream Hunter, Craigslist, and also Facebook marketplace. For comparison, we looked at an ‘84 Sovereign a couple weeks back. The body was perfect but the floor was completely rotted out and it smelled as though someone had been murdered in it. The ask was $16,000.

Hi

I'd go for it. In today's market it's not going to hang around very long. Judging by the housing market, a lot of folks are simply plunking down money with no inspections and no qualifiers on the deal.

Figure that even in fine shape, you will spend some money on it. Maybe the A/C, maybe the brakes, maybe the fridge , probably the batteries, probably the tires.... Budget $10K and spend whatever is left over on your first trip

Looks like a great deal to me, maybe even tilted toward taking advantage of your friend. I would set aside a couple thousand and if everything checks out after a few weeks give it to your friend.

It’s probably worth it!

We bought a 1999 Excella Classic early last fall for 28k. She’s a permanent install as a second house on our country property. She was turn-key with 5k of work having been done in recent years, including a new HVAC controller. That said, she threw a curve ball at us as with a small black tank valve leak. We solved this with an external slicer valve, but not after sending a poop-cam down thru the loo to see what we could see! Also, a main awning bracket broke. The replacement part was less than $100. Know that the mirrored doors can be turned around. Yes, more oak, but less mirror! We don’t regret a penny we spent on her!

If you don't want it, I'll take it. Don't you dare paint that wood.

2-3 years ago that would have been a little high (should have been $12,000-19,000). Now it's a bit low, going rate now would be $25,000-35,000 the condition that trailer looks to be in would rate mid to higher end. As for the twin beds I much prefer that option, much better storage and feels like much more room inside.

Several has mention that it is a Excellas but the owner says it a "Classic Unlimited" and sent me a picture of the "Classic" on the back of the end and the word "Unlimited" on the side of it. He also said doesn't say Excellas anywhere on the trailer. I check Airsteam for spec sheets and has a 30 foot "Unlimited" listed separate from the Excellas. My question is this a Excellas or is it a Classic Unlimited? What is the difference?

Different models. Excela model or Classic Limited model. Not both at the same time. Difference will be layout and interior trim. I do not know which was the most expensive originally. I do think that now the exact model does not make any difference in value. Condition means everything. That trailer still sounds good to me. That is a very large solar and inverter and was a very expensive addition to the trailer. They probably did the power converter too.

Take your truck and your checkbook when you go look at it.

GRAB IT and RUN HOME!! That is the top of the line model! Looks to be in good condition. Those years had problems with the adhesive holding the ceiling vinyl in place, as well as the "mouse fur" adhesive on the walls. It could either be a narrow or wide body as that was the first year of the wide body. I would leave the twin beds as it gives much more room in the trailer. Please don't paint the oak interior!! If you buy it, and intend to travel, check the axles, as they may need replacement. Good luck!

I would classify the pricing as "family discount" as the market today is getting more for similar units without issues. As noted above, after a month and NO discoveries of hidden rot or failing appliances you might consider making your friend whole.

Personally, I'd keep the twins as my trailer started as a queen before I converted it. The trailer will feel much longer/bigger without the queen in the hallway sight line and it is much easier to dress (which you will end up doing in the hall).

Decorating is a personal color/fabric choice but I, too, would not paint the wood but rather upgrade the lighting to LED for a brighter interior space. I removed the mouse fur in mine and put up ultraleather instead to cover the old adhesive marks; it's a nicer finish and easier to keep clean. I expect you will need to replace/upgrade the furniture foams which will have decayed with age as Airstream installed the cheapest available with a seven to ten year lifespan.

Some decorating ideas:
https://www.airforums.com/forums/f39...ml#post2007256
https://www.airforums.com/forums/f39...ml#post1755984

In summary, grab it and tow if it passes your inspection.

We did it, we purchased a 94 Airstream. We will be picking it up next weekend. Our plans are to do some updating and enjoying it for many years to come. We did find some incorrect info and that it is Excella Classic Unlimited 28 foot not 30 foot. We found that there isn't an inverter and only one solar panel. The back window is out but there on sitting at the dealers ready to installed on the 19th of Jul.

Wow, an expensive couple of days. Yesterday we bought a 1994 Airstream 28 footer with GVWR of 8400 pounds. Today we bought a 2015 Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi with yellow door sticker payload of just over 3100 pounds and towing capacity of over 12,000 pounds. Also, it has a 2 1/2 hitch so even the hitch we are in good shape. Now on to updating and fixing the Airstream with more cash then we will ever hope to get out of it. Brings back memories of restoring old cars.
