OK, maybe just one...
A woman hears from her doctor that she has only half a year to live. The doctor advises her to marry an economist and to live in South Dakota. The woman asks, "will this cure my illness"? Answer of the doctor: "No, but the half year will seem pretty long".

My understanding is that it isn't a done deal, because the details haven't been worked out yet. What we have is an announcement of an intention. No exceptions were announced, but that doesn't mean that there won't be any.
When the steel tariffs were put in place in 2002 Canada and Mexico were exempt because of the provisions of NAFTA.

I have a degree in Economics. And tariffs on something like this will result in retaliation. The end result is that it leads to a decreased standard of living as it increases the cost of goods and allows for inefficiencies to perpetuate in the market. We have already been penalizing dumping (which I'm all for). But tariffs generally don't work out well for anyone; especially the consumer. It's really a tax on the consumer as companies pass costs on to the consumer.

Alcoa also makes the Wheels for the Interstate and other manufacturers the wheels for the trailers. Its a metal intensive product. I expect raw material prices to rise at least 10% for trailers, so will that get passed on? The consensus here seems to be yes, and then some. I tend to agree that this will help resale values. I expect there will already be a good inflationary rise (3% or so) to trailer prices, and it might even offset the loss of the tax deduction for some.

Ah...not a done deal. Not signed yet. Some think today's announcement was a trial balloon. Remember the border tax?

I lived in China. They need a lot of planes and neither Boeing nor Airbus can handle their needs alone. Also, China's plane manufacturing is new. I bet there is no impact on Boeing in China.

Have you ever seen the price of Airstreams not go up year to year? It will go up. And since we're all buying a very high end product, it won't matter much.

Exactly. The most immediate affect on my pocketbook is beer prices. Maybe we could all get together and work something out with the manufacturers if we promise to recycle our cans.

Tariffs can help prevent dumping, and can be a strategic carrot on a stick in negotiations.
An example of the positive outcome is we saved Harley Davidson with tariffs.
“Sometimes, tariffs can benefit an economy by ensuring its businesses have an even playing field. For example, some tariffs are implemented as part of anti-dumping laws, as a reaction when a company based overseas sells products below its costs or below what it sells them for less than it does at home, in an effort to eliminate rivals and build its position in the market in order to charge higher prices later. Others are meant to protect when the competition isn’t equal. If one country subsidizes its auto industry and another does not, a tariff can keep that discrepancy from unfairly impacting a domestic industry.“

Yep, yep, yep. When you're right, you're right. I should switch over to glass exclusively. I don't want to be the cause of the world economy grinding to a halt just because of my personal proclivities.

US aluminum production has been tanking for quite some time now.
Alcoa (AA) was the world’s number two aluminum producer in 2007, in 2015, Fourth.
The US has two active smelters, while 55% of US aluminum demand is met with imports.
Do the math!

Aluminum
As far as aircraft, Boeing is using a lot more of composites now. The B787 Dreamliner, etc.. Maybe it's time for the US to start manufacturing more and not depend on other countries.

Back in my Air Farce daZe, F15's use a titanium alloy.
Very light, ultra strong, very expensive and highly flammable!
I watched one burn on the flightline, WHOA!
Probably not a practical replacement for a Airstream skin unless you are planning on doing Mach 2

Done Deal? Maybe, maybe not. So if the NAFTA talks go south, then I guess all bets are off on supplies from two of the top 5 countries that import aluminum. Understand Thor bought a foundry that makes extruded parts, but that would not include the wheels or skin(s) (inner and outer) of AS trailers. I believe those are still all AA. Thoughts?

I doubt the cost of aluminum is more than 2% of the total cost of an Airstream. The big danger is companies saying, "Tariffs" when in fact it's an excuse to jack up the price.
