1979 classic afternoon value

Hello,

New to the forum. I am looking at purchasing a 1979 classic afternoon 20 ft. Seller is asking 13,700 for it and says its in excellent condition. I am supposed to look at it in a few days. Seems a bit high to me, but i am new to this. What's a fair price?

Thanks,

Mark

Sounds very reasonable. Things to look at . . . as best you can:
  • Any floor rot?
  • Has the axle been replaced (it should be)
  • What systems work? Propane? Plumbing? 12 volt?
  • Does it stink?

Those are a few places to start. It's a desirable size. If you like the vintage and more things work than don't the price looks good. There are just a lot of variables.

That does look like it is excellent shape, it may be worth that. 1979 and most the '70's are not the highly sought after Airstreams, being that the 70's interiors are just that, the 70's. Lots of us have 70's trailers and they are fine, I have a '72 in need of every thing. That one looks ready to travel.

If you could find some one local, with Airstream knowledge to look at it with you that would be super beneficial. If not there are some threads here discussing what to look for. Floor rot from leaks, which can lead to frame problems are generally what you need to Look for. My guess is that trailer should be ok.
At its age it may need new axles, but that is also very normal.

Let us know what happens. Good luck.

Re-reading my post I sound a bit negative on the '70's trailers, don't take it like that, they are still classic Airstreams and you'd be super happy with that unit I bet.

Thanks for the info. What does it cost ballpark to change out an axle? Also what do I need to look out for in the electrical system? Thanks.

Hi

Things to get checked before pulling it a long ways down the road:

1) Tires (if over 6-10 years old, replace them)
2) Brakes
3) Wheel bearings
4) The usual electrical hookups to turn signals and brakes
5) Battery (if over 5 years old, replace it)

If the current owners have records of all this being checked or replaced recently that would work for me. If you are going to replace the battery, I'd replace the converter / charger as well. For $300 or so it's well worth it.

Since things look in good shape, I'd go out and use it once it's safe to tow. Figure out what you like and what needs a touch up.

If every thing electrical works you should be good, if it's not broken don't fix it.
If it still has a stock converter it may be due for a update/ upgrade.

Two complete axles with new brakes will run you about $1300.00

There is a measurement to test and measure the sag in the axles and the 'life' left in them, it's pretty simple. I'll try and find a link or search the forum yourself to get familiar with the torsion flex axles.

every single unit i owned from 1964 to 1979 (ten of them) were BULLET proof!
the 64 still had orig working AC and Fridge!
I never had to replace an axle and on my 1st 79 it had disc brakes that I restored.
I never had any of the issues I see on these newer units .
Im a boomer and am FINE with the 70s look EVEN orange carpet!
just sayin.

Oh and that price seems high!
Waiv cash in their face and I bet you can trim off A FEW GRAND !

If it was kept inside a garage when not being used it's probably worth the money, if left outside there will be some water damage. It probably needs an axle due to age. Desirable size so somebody will likely pony up that price. There is still a lot of life left in that old trailer if you keep on top of leaks!

Are the upper cabinets original? They have one piece doors. Airstreams had tambour doors.

Cheers,

John

Be nice to pay less, but that price is not way out of line, does the fridge work? Really? New one is another 1,000$ My seller assured me the fridge worked, I should have had him turn it on and make some ice. If it's truly camp ready, and the skin is not too pitted I think it's worth asking price.

Really appreciate the help and great feedback. Will let the forum know how it goes. I plan to negotiate hard. I still have so much to learn and this is the first one I have gotten serious on. Would hate to get burned.

Ok so I have talked to the seller and have a few more details. Her story is that she loved these old trailer and is always finding one dolling them up a bit and than moving them down the road. Currently she has 3. She says she has put a subfloor in this trailer and that it has all new wiring. Wired for 12v and 110 with a 30 amp hookup. Claims all systems work but recommends a new fridge given the age. I told her I would be interested at 10k or less. Her reaction seemed that for cash money we could probably work something out. Thoughts?

One concern I have is that I found this while on vacation and will have to haul it 600 miles back to Texas.

Well if this is the first one you've looked at, I think it might be good to look around a bit. If othis one still looks good after checking a few more hopefully it's still around.
Good luck.

Hi

If you are going to haul it 600 miles, get the tires, brakes, and bearings all checked. That's not to say new tires all around, just make sure they are in good shape. Get it done by somebody who understands how to jack up the trailer without damaging it ....

If I didn't have "Whammy" I would drive 1200 miles to get her.
