1949 Trailwind

Hi I知 new here. I have a 1949 trailwind with all vintage interior and everything works. We tow it around Yellowstone in summers w no problems. I知 wondering how to find out a good selling price for this trailer as I can no longer give it indoor winter storage next year. Also wondering how to find a tail light cover that we just broke.

Found a serial number too and does that alter value if it痴 a low number? Thanks. I can add pics.

I think you're going to have a tough time getting forum members to help you establish the price. We don't know enough about the unit to assess its condition, and yours is older than most of the units around.

I suggest contacting someone who specializes in Airstream appraisals like Jim Polk. Pay the $300 for the appraisal, and include a copy of the appraisal in the sale, which will be valuable for insurance purposes.

To be clear, I’m not attempting to sell this trailer on this forum, but I can’t store it next winter after I use it to house interns this summer so I’m preparing by trying to figure out what it may be worth and how to find a replacement taillight. Thanks!

Boy, that is quite a trailer you have there. Great pictures. I've never seen photos of a 1949 trailer in that good of condition. I'll take a SWAG at this. I should think it would be worth $40k or more to the right buyer. That buyer will be an Airstream afishionado who values these rolling history pieces and enjoys showing them. That buyer would take some time to find. Maybe it's like asking what an all original Model T is worth.

I would think this trailer is not a candidate for a week long trip fly fishing somewhere with the guys. It is a showpiece. It ought to be well insured. Parts for the thing are very hard to find.

You might "private message" user 66Overlander who is very knowledgeable in Airstream history. He may guide you to someone who can give you a more accurate estimate.

Here is a photo of a "Liner" on display at the Airstream factory in Jackson Center. They have a collection of interesting old Airstreams.

Those tail lamps are not original to the trailer, but they look like 1932 Ford taillights. Do a google search and I'm sure you can find a replacement lens and probably even a complete housing, since that one looks bent.

I can't begin to help estimating a good asking price, but I want to thank you for posting these pics. I've got serial number 1406 I'm working to renovate, and these pictures help. Although there were clearly some changes during 1949, because the galley unit in my unit (and earlier ones) was a stainless steel unit and they've clearly shifted to the wooden cabinet and Formica top in your unit. Similarly, I've got the cruddy Air-O-Lite windows in mine, and they've shifted to better windows (Hehr?) in yours. With respect to the brake lights, they are indeed not original. Up into the early 50's, only a single stop/tail light was required on trailers, so only the center light is original. The side stop/tail lights were a later addition, and it is always interesting to see what people did to add them after the fact.
