Dumb question

Has anyone ever purchased a trailer without a title for restoration purposes. If so, how did you go about securing a title?

Trailer titles are not required in all states if the trailer is very old. We just registered a '74 and the lady at DMV said it we didn't need a title. If you don't have one and your state requires a title you could probably get one the same way people do that buy wrecked vehicles and fix them up to sell. I hope this will help. Linda

It varies very much by state. We purchased a 66 overlander that had no title, but had a certified (notarized) bill of sale to us, and the notarized bill of sale to the person we got it from. We also checked with 6 surrounding states to make sure the vin was clear. Then we went through broadway title and had them help us get it titled. Few hundred bucks well spent and a few weeks later we had a good title, plates and were set to go. Big issue in any state, make sure all the numbers match and check everywhere to make sure it is legit and that your state accepts titling a non-titled vehicle or will accept something from Broadway title or other similiar businesses before spending a dime.

Be sure to do a search to find out if it was stolen. Here in Tennessee, the local law enforcement officer must do a check before they will issue a title if original isn't available. Your state will have it's own official to do the search. Do this before you start any work. I would hate to see you lose the TT when you go to title it after renovations. If the original owner wanted it back, most states recognize them as the owner.
