Discounts on 2013 Models- How much off MSRP?
Hi there,
We are looking to purchase an AS (not in any particular hurry) and found one we liked today. They are offering about 20% off MSRP by my calculations and that was without going further into negotiations. Is this a good starting place?
What are buyers seeing out there as far as savings off sticker when buying a 2013 as opposed to a 2014 or special order?
My wife and I plan on being weekenders along with our son who is approaching 1 year old. As he gets older I definitely see more of our time spent using the AS.
Other price related questions I have-
- What financing rates can I expect for excellent credit? I could pay cash however I see a benefit in writing off a 2nd home mortgage interest/tax deduction.
- Approximate annual Insurance cost- I have policies with State Farm
- Maintenance costs to expect in the first few years
Guidance/suggestions would be helpful. I'd prefer to buy from a dealer and avoid the private party hassle.

I recently placed a special order at about 19% discount. I probably saved more than that though because I didn't have to pay for things I did not want. I had observed that most stock units came with a second TV, and the convection MW. I actually did not want even the 1st TV and also wanted the normal oven.

I did not buy a new one but negotiated for one. I was given 15% off msrp on a current model year. I was told that 20 percent is good but in the case of a year older new I would think it would be a greater percentage. Consider that the value will be 35-40 percent from msrp when you drive away by the book.

My negotiations back in June revealed:
2013 on lot 19-20% off
2014 special order 18% off
If 2013 on lot then I would say that 20% off is decent - depends on the particular model - how many alternatives you have - bit 22-25% on a 2013 by end of years seems possible -
This all was based on *my* negotiations - so take that with a grain of salt
If it were me I would find ones on lots that were what I wanted and simply tell all parties that you will take the best offer
Good luck - even at 20% off that ain't bad - if it was delivered during snow season of 2013 push for lower if you can and inspect ones carefully if been on lot for a while - filiform corrosion - dings - etc

We brought our EB new in 2012 from dealer dropping AS line for 25% off,had talked to well respected dealer closer and they would only go about 16% off.

That sounds pretty good if the trailer has not been sitting there subjected to tire kickers and weathering for a long time, maybe a little better. It is last year's model already, the 2014's have been out for awhile.
I would be more concerned with getting the exact trailer I want and in perfect condition than saving a few bucks.

Yes, especially buying new, you have to get what you want/need.

How long will 2013s be around new at dealers typically? Are they typically all gone by the end of the year or will you be able to find these well into 2014 with even greater savings??

I would think the most desirable trailers are already sold and people are buying 2014's.
Depends on if you want to choose your trailer or take what they have.
I was on Foley's lot a couple of weeks ago and all the trailers on the lot were 2014's.

Most "stock" units are loaded with all the options.
While the options are not all expensive individually, together they add up.
I would avoid the electric awning because of the wiring issue I have seen on the two 2014s with this option, the 1,000 watt inverter and the two 53 watt solar panels system. We wanted the gas oven and most dealers are ordering the convection microwave option. We did not need or want a microwave, but it comes anyway on the 31' Classic 30 with the standard gas oven.
For the money charged for the factory solar panels and inverter, one can get a 400+ watt solar system with a Magnum inverter/converter and every outlet has power all the time with a multi stage battery minder built in. Check out AM Solar systems.

Appreciate the feedback on here and the pm's - we bought our 2013 23FB today and got what i felt was a great deal while getting all of the options that we really wanted. We weren't fans of the new style U-shaped dinette in the 2014 so it worked out in our favor to buy a "new" discounted 2013 (build date in April '13). Price worked out to over 20% off MSRP. Very happy and ready to begin planning our first trips.
Cheers,
Chris

How much over 20%? We just sold our 21' AS this week, we're going to a dealer who has four 2013 25FB units still in stock, just to look. :-)
We were really hoping to find a 2006 - 2008 25FB to replace our little 21 footer but they are none out there.

Congratulations! Enjoy your first trip!
We just did the same thing. We bought a 2013 27FB off the lot and got a 20%+ discount on the price. We are on our second trip with it and couldn't be happier. The price was right and it has all the basics for what we need. I'm sure we will add options in the future, but just getting in one and taking off was the best decision for us.
Where and when is your first trip?

From my research and calls I found most dealers invoice to be 25% off the Airstream MSRP- $1500 over invoice was the deal I was able to work and it was a grind. I felt happy at the end of the day to pay a hair over 50k for a 69k sticker and they gave us a free year storage. We added solar, Equalizer hitch and Prodigy RF Brake Controller.
It took time, we didn't make any impulsive choices- we wanted the right trailer for us along with the options we wanted. My suggestion would be to keep looking and make sure to really get what you want- as it gets into December the dealers will work harder to move 2013's.
Call around- look on the internet and good luck on the negotiation. This part I love, some people don't. You'd be amazed how many people just pay sticker or don't negotiate. In this case it meant $20k in my pocket (or not out of my pocket) in savings
Also as suggested by many of the folks on this forum- look the trailer over VERY thoroughly. I spent nearly an hour inspecting it and fortunately for us the trailer was built late April and hadn't had much time on the lot (in California). Look at the plate to see when in 2013 it was made.
I have to say the feedback on this forum has been amazing. I am very happy to be a part of the Airstream community- lots of awesome folks here.
Keep us posted and good luck!
Chris

Very nice- the 27FB is AWESOME but for us was a little big (towing with a Touareg).
First trips we are going to do some local beach camping in December to get used to the battery life, solar, propane use, etc. I have traveled more out of the country than in the US so we are eager to hit the road and see it all. Glad you found a great deal on a SWEET trailer!
