Dealer labor rate per hour

Interested if anyone has a view on what AS dealers typically charge for a labor-hour. I am picking up a new AS in a few weeks and have a quote from them on a couple of items. $160 per hour seems high to me but I'm new to this so perhaps that's common.

Thanks in advance.

At $160.00 an hour, that would be a yearly income of $320,000.00.

A quick search shows the following:
A general lawyer in 2020 makes $84,771. However, different types of lawyers have different salaries. The average trial lawyer makes $103,712 while the average corporate lawyer makes $111,026

Based on this information, I would hire a "general lawyer" to work on the trailer. Even if it takes them twice as long, you're money ahead

Either that, depending on your yearly income, you might be money ahead taking a long vacation and doing it yourself.

You're in New York, everything cost $$$$ and is one of the reasons people a leaving that state.

Enjoy,

Yes, I expect the $160 an hour to be pretty common. I expect Jackson Center is that much also. No, the workers do not get paid that amount. You have to have a lot of good heated shop space to do much work on an Airstream and I suspect that costs a bit of money. That $160 an hour should cover a lot of support costs. So far this year have had a transmission installed in my truck and my heating system for my house repaired. I was impressed at the hourly charges for those services too. And the plumber that used to be a doctor joke is still right on the mark.

Hi

Labor rates include a lot of things that may not be very obvious. Working out all of the various "contributions" to this or that is never going to be easy. $150 seems to be about as low as it gets for labor at an in town "retail" ( = there's a store front ) location. I've seen numbers up to about $260 an hour here or there for automotive / RV sorts of work.

If you head over to somebody named Bob working out of a large garage behind their house out in the country, I suspect the rate would be lower. How much lower .... who knows.

If you really want to feel good, check out the labor rate at your local BMW dealer .....

That seems like a reasonable rate today. I wouldn’t question it. However, in the automotive industry, standard jobs are set to cost a standard amount of time (I.e., oil change = 1 hour, transmission change = x hours per model of car and model of transmission, etc.); what come into play is, from my experience, that the hours are padded and the jobs don’t actually take as long as the book says.

So, all that being said, you may agree to the work but try to negotiate a 10 to 20 percent discount if the total job is thousands of dollars.

Keep in mind that the parts may be a separate department, in which case you would need to negotiate with the parts department manager as well.

Lastly, that rate includes the hourly wage for the worker, plus the insurance, tax burden, and administrative costs for employing that worker.

Once again - it depends

If located in NY, the workers' compensation and health care rates are relatively high (only higher in Alaska, I think). Used to be a rule of thumb to multiply wages by .28 to estimate taxes and insurance overhead; now it is about .5 to .7 - sneaking up on double. And that doesn't include floor space, inventory carrying costs, property taxes, etc. $160 appears about normal.

Keep in mind that $225 hr today is equivalent to about $41 hr in 1975 - I asked my mother once about tie and she said the only thing that has changed is the number of zeros - so shop rates are much higher and so is our income - I would even go far to to say a lot of baby boomers are doing better now than our parents did

$160/hour seems reasonable. The shop that used to work on my coach charged $158/hr, and they were billing me at the commercial account rate. Retail was $175/hr.

Hourly rate includes lots more than just labor - everything from shop insurance and overhead to training and other Human Resources costs.

Pay for maint?....Never.
Back in the day,(2003) I did my own warranty work, JC sent the parts, I tried to get them to pay my labor but no/go.
Dealer did a rotten PDI and then closed....

Try that today?

Probably "normal"

My local non-Airstream RV repair place was charging $149/hour LAST winter, and they usually book several months out and are quite busy. I am sure it is higher now.
