AS Tax Deductions

Does anyone use their AS as housing on business trips or working on assignments? I do consulting work lasting 2 to 3 months and usually get housing in motels. I would love to have my own home on wheels on these trips but I'm not sure what the IRS would say to an Airstream as a business deduction.

Absolutly. You have to stay somewhere! As long as you seperate the personal use from the business use, I see no reason not to.

You could deduct the campground fees at the least.

You should be able to deduct mileage from your regular office to the remote site, CONUS per diem rates unless on an expense account, campground fees, and other normal expenses related to being gone from your normal home/office.

disclaimer: I am not a tax professional nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I asked my accountant about doing that a couple of years ago and he said yes you can do it. Lots of rules and you must keep very good records but you can recover a lot of the cost and I believe he said there you can take depreciation too. I am not an accountant and would seek the counsel of a good one especially this day and time.

Actually our business, videography, requires us to be on the road a lot. Yes, we use the trailer as a straight business deduction ALL the way. It depends upon the year and dont ask me how he does it but our accountant will often have us as individuals renting the trailer to the company for very high dollar and other times we claim it as an equipment type expense............so YES....Go for it.....If nothing else one can deduct the interest as a second home........Dennis
