Airstream Protection

I am buying a new 20" Flying Cloud and the dealer wants to sell me a protection package for the skin and materials inside. The protection would be for 7 years but cost $2,700. Any opinions?

Pure profit for the dealer.

This is a product that is a question to many. It should be a nano-seal that can eliminate the need for frequent waxing. Many would rather save the money and wax twice a year. Others see an advantage to the sealer.

The aluminum skin is clear coated in the manufacturing process, but the edges and feature cuts are bare. Some method of sealing those raw edges is required. Regular wax will work. Special AS wax will work. The nano-seal will do it too and give you a waranty as well.

Many do not believe in the value of a warranty, with reasonable justification. That is part of your consideration. Investigate your dealer and their policy on honoring their agreements, read the small print and understand what is and is not covered. Also investigate the quality of the product being applied and the capability of the dealer to apply it correctly.

The interior application may have less value than the exterior. A clean cloth and a bit of water goes a long way in cleaning the interior.

In any case, remove bugs and bird droppings as soon as possible. Do not leave it for another day. The spray cleaners are good to have on hand and even if you nano-seal, a wax will provide an additional layer of protection. Note - wax boils off quickly. There are a lot of products on the market. Understand value of each.

Scratches - from time to time the finish will get scratched. Get a clearcoat pen from the dealer and repair scratches immediately.

Good luck with the new coach. Looking for your smile down the road. Pat
