New Mexico to Florida/ February
We are planning a slow trip from New Mexico to Florida in February to see relatives. I would like to visit Big Bend NP again and maybe South Padre Island (which I have never been to). More interested in nature and off the beaten track than cities. Any recommendations?

For Louisiana leg check out the route of the WBBCI Cajun Country Country Rally.
"WBCCI Cajun Country Caravan 2016 including stops at Yogi Bear Jellystone Park, Madison, FL, Frenchman’s Wilderness Campground, Breaux Bridge as a base for exploring Baton Rouge to see the old and new Capitol Buildings, the Governor’s Mansion, the LSU Rural Life Museum; KOC Campground, New Iberia, LA where we visited the McIlhenny Tabasco Plant on Avery Island, the Acadian Culture Center and Acadian Village in Lafayette; Abbeville where we had breakfast with the Town Council and learned about the history and economics of the area; and held a baby alligator; St. Martinville where we saw the Evangeline Oak, Eunice, LA where I attended the Crawfish Etoufee Cookoff (dat’s good yeah), Bayou Wilderness RV Resort in Carencro, and Pelican Palms RV Resort, Milton, FL and Pecan Park RV Park in Jacksonville, FL on the way home. We had a great time thanks to our wonderful hosts and caravan leaders, Larry and Judy Boudreaux. This rally is a must do if you are a WBCCI member!"

I pulled this together some years back, for a rally that was cancelled due to lack of interest.

Lumatic, I'm just southwest of you, at the moment, in Belen topping off Roxy's batteries and packing for a Monday departure. We are heading for MS Gulf to start then will probably make our way down towards Padre Island. We should meet up if it works out.

@Breezinalong
We absolutely love the MS gulf Coast, so much so we purchased property in Bay Saint Louis for our own camping spot. I would like to recommend the Silver Slipper Casino campground if you have never stayed there. The campground has no amenities other than full hook ups and the best view along the coast.

We have 10 days at Buccaneer SP, and then we may mosey down the road to the Silver Slipper for a bit. If you're in town, let us know.

If you're headed to Big Bend, check out Davis Mt. SP. also Seminole Canyon SP outside Del Rio. Stephen Austin SP is off I-10 near Houston. Sam Houston Jones SP outside Lake Charles, Farr Park outside Baton Rouge is near the Mississippi River and quiet overnite spot. Fontainbleau SP on Lake Pontchartrain is nice. Meaher SP is on Mobile Bay and a short hop to view the battleship Alabama. Beyond that there are a bunch of great state parks along I-10 or along the panhandle coast. Your choice.
As far as weather, expect sun, rain, clouds, fog, cold or warm weather, humidity and a combination of all the above.

Consider yourself invited. From Belen I-25 s to Bernardo. US 60 east past Mountaineer to SR 41. North on 41 11 miles to my place. Look out for the Airstream in the front yard.
A must see if you have not done it yet is Bosque del Apache Wildlife refuge

Actually, I think we passed your place coming home last time we were out and about. I remember seeing an large, older AS out there.
I meant when you start heading to Padre, let us know. We'll meet up! We are heading SB on Monday.

Can you send me a weather report. We won't be out there until February. Will you still be around?

Don't miss the Texas Hill Country! Several great state parks (see http://tpwd.texas.gov for descriptions of each park and reservations). Wineries, historic sites (Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg is great--Adm. Nimitz's home town).

and when you finally cross Mobile Bay and get into Florida, make sure to head to the beach and continue on US 98 which follows the coast (right along it). St. Andrews SP in Panama City, especially St. Joe Peninsula SP with the most beautiful beaches, St. George Island SP offshore after you stop for oysters and beer (at a new brewery) in Apalachicola, and continuing thru Panacea and St. Marks NWR is a route you will not be disappointed in before heading south (US 27 is a very nice alternative) and seeing why old crackers like me say Florida south of Orlando is gone. Safe travels. jon

I wouldn't recommend camping on South Padre, personally.
The area near Malaquite SP is much more user friendly, and you can have the use of the dump station and water fill at the park campground.
One of our favorite places.
