bed comfort/memory foam

we have a 1969 globetrotter which has the "full" size bed conversion in the back. the previous owners updated the foam so it is about 5 inches thick, 3 inches of which is regular foam with 2 inches of memory foam. we have slept in about 5 nights total now, and I wouldnt say its uncomfortable, but we are used to our costco memory foam which feels like a cloud and we have sore back muscles after a few nights sleep in the airstream. My idea was to order a full size memory foam and lay out the current cushions, trace, and cut the memory foam to size. but i want to know what memory foam you all would recommend. we like a blend of soft and firm! we want it to last, not something that would flatten out like a pancake after a year or so.

Why not the same model/type mattress you have at home? By the way, your basic $20 electric carving knife from Bed, Bath and Beyond is a very handy tool for carving foam.

Mattresses are highly subjective and the only way to get what you really want is to try a bunch of different types and see which ones you like best.

Personally, the best mattress I have ever owned was an adjustable sleep number bed. Such a mattress would be perfect in an airstream; it's very lightweight, hypoallergenic, does not harbor mites, mildew or other critters - BUT FOR the blasted corner in the 69 GT! Alas!

We have a sleep number at home and love it. We also put one in the airstream, works great.

We just upgraded our 2015 27fb FC factory queen by adding a Tempurpedic memory foam mattress topper. Firm but body-hugging. For $239 it completely solved our sore back and hips problem! tempurpedic.com
