Should I be worried about a noisy converter?

Oh I hope someone can help me. I am a little worried. Over the weekend we noticed our Parallex 7300 converter has been making a soft high pitched, buzzing-squeak like noise every now and then.

While it was the making the sound, I happened to turn on a light (the stove top range exhaust hood light, to be specific) and as soon as I flipped the switch, the sound immediately stopped. Then, turn off the light -- and the sound came back on.

This is our second coverter - the first one burned out and really scared me with all of the smoke in the cabin (which is why I am worried now).

Does anyone have any suggestions? I understand this unit is not the best and does fail -- is this sound it is making the beginnings of a failure?

Thank you so much for reading.

Not sure about your model, however these modern converters use a
"switching power supply" Basically turning on and off at a high rate of speed then going though a magnetic coil and converted to the charging voltage. Anyhow, that coil can make some noise, something a little loose, a metal plate near it. If your voltage is OK, unit does not feel hot to touch..it is most likely fine. And it will change sound with a change in load.

IMHO....best course of action.

Get rid of the P-lex..ours ruined 4 batteries before I wised up and replaced it.

And yes, it too was noisy.

Thanks everyone. So much. I will keep you posted with our course of action. At least this is happening now before the ski season hits where we will need power for the furnace. Oiy.

The Parallax converter on my 2011 Serenity International just started symptoms very much as you described, including the buzz stopping when I turn on the light over the range.

How did you eventually get this resolved ?

The original poster hasn't been on the forums in over 1.5 years. You're not likely to get a response from her.

It is generally recommended that you replace the original converter. If your Airstream has 30 amp shore power, replace it with a Progressive Dynamics PD-4655 converter. The install is easy - it took me about half an hour. This thread has an excellent pictorial step-by-step installation guide:

You'll find the best price and service that can't be beat from www.bestconverter.com.

Good luck!

Jim

I'm occasionally in contact with the OP through another venue. I'll send her a message, and make sure I remember the solution correctly.

In what has to be the quickest response in history, the issue was a failing converter. The converter was replaced, and all is well in her trailer's world.
