Rear camera system that ties to an OEM Screen?
Do any of the rear camera systems support using OEM screens for the monitor in Ford trucks?
Do I need a dedicated monitor to see behind me?

I believe that the answer is no. I am planning to do this with my new GMC Sierra, but it will take some creativity. I'll be delving into this very question in a few months. I'll also be subscribing to this thread so I'll be watching this space.

2017 Ford trucks have an optional camera that mounts on trailers, uses the OEM screen. Not sure if it will work on other year of Ford trucks or other makes.

GM has an integrated system, sold as an accessory.

The only solution I'm aware of would be a jailbreak kit that added video inputs. These are pretty commonly available and could be installed by a stereo shop if you're not comfortable. It will give you several selectable video inputs. The added bonus is with the jailbreak kits you can also usually cycle through any of the inputs while driving, including your tailgate cam.

I believe it is on the GM accessories website. Can't search right now, have to go out. Up to 5 cameras run from the touchscreen, one at a time or split screens. Wireless. About $1000 for the standard 4 camera system.
Retro back to the k2xx truck intro, 2014 forward for 1500, 2016 forward for HD.

The GM OEM system is made by AAMP Global and is marketed by a division called Echomaster. The trademark name of that system is Intellihaul. The $1,000 system has: - An electronics integration/interface module
- 2 mirror mounted cameras
- 1 trailer mounted camera connected via WiFi
- a truck mounted WiFi Unit
- Necessary wiring and hardware
This is a pretty complex system. Here's a video that shows how it operates. Also, . Echomaster has less expensive versions of this system with a cargo camera monitor, another with a trailer monitor. These systems are sold through GM dealers and are not marketed directly to the public.
A jailbreak box is similar to the electronics integration/interface module described above. These units are north of $300 plus the cost of camera and whatever else is required. I talked to a local electronics shop about one of these and they will not install the jailbreak type systems due to liability and safety issues and I understand their stance.
What I'm thinking about is to buy an additional GM back up camera and install it on the back of my trailer. I'd hard wire it up to a connector where it would plug into the truck via a connector that I would add. This system would display the trailer backup camera when it is plugged in on the GM Navigation screen rather than the truck back up camera.
I may do this and I may not. I have lots of ideas that I think about for a long time and never do. Others like my sliding generator mounting tray, I think about for years and finally execute all the-pent up thought.

Rich - Thanks for the info!
Steve - Thanks for the details and video links!
Pretty clear it's tightly integrated. Up there in price too...

Hostage46,
You didn't mention what year and model of Ford truck you have, but here is a link to Echomaster so you can look into some of what is available. There are several companies that operate in this market. I wish you well in this quest!

I don't want to go off topic either...but any OEM (GM/Ford/Chrysler/Nissan/etc.) entertainment system is tightly integrated into the digital data archetecture of the entire vehicle and lacks the individual (AKA descrete) inputs of an aftermarket head unit such as video in/out. So under most circumstances, you'll need a interface unit to break into the OEM archeture. I'll write a bit more on this topic later if desired

Of course they do. Because people use the system to watch movies while driving, or unlock the Nav controls while driving...but there are legitimate uses as well.

Head over to the Cummins forum and look at the jailbreak threads. There's a pretty good system out there that many people use to add a front camera as well.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, the only way to use the OEM GM system for an observation camera on the trailer would be to jailbreak it somehow?
I like the idea of an integrated system, but can't see spending $1K on something I can't use to help change lanes.

I asked that question and was assured the screens can be utilized while driving the same as toggling between navigation and entertainment, for example. I have only played with a static display vehicle. I also haven't definitively been told if it is a digital system. I assume it is, but can't find it in print.

The jailbreak is for the head unit not the camera system, and it was an answer to the OP who has a ford. If you have a GM compatible with the GM camera system go for it.
