BlackVue 4K DR900S-2ch Dash cam

BlackVue was kind enough to send me their latest model 4K 2channel DashCam with Power Magic Pro battery managment system.
I believe the Dash Cam is becoming an essential tool for RV Travel. The ability to record events that happen while traveling can be both entertaining and a form of legal protection.
I will be posting an in-depth install and review of this product in my Airforums Blog as well as my weekly www.doityourselfrv.com post.

What are your thoughts on DashCams and their usefulness to the RV traveler?

I've been looking at that particular dashcam; I'll be interested to hear what you think of it.

I've had a couple of close calls, in less than a year, while towing. In each instance, a car entered the road right in front of me. How did they not see me? I think that there must be car drivers out there who would benefit from towing, to learn how it might change braking distance and maneuverability!

It looks like a great system. I hope to install this weekend.

this is a good source for dash cams
https://www.blackboxmycar.com/

the best ones are from Korea and DO NOT use batteries.
they use SUPERCAPs.

why? The camera in the window gets VERY hot.
Batteries die, melt or blow up
super caps do not

that is why a go pro makes a bad dashcam

Last trip, we had some person in Texas Pass our rig, then deliberately toss a cup of coffee to obscure our windshield. Fortunately for me, it was a straight section of highway and the washers and wipers immediately cleared my view.

We have a clear video clip of the event, and will be passing it on to the Texas State Troopers got action...

Yes, it’s handy for incidents. I have both front and rear cameras recording all the time the truck is running...

I have Blackvue's in both my wife's and my truck. Single channel in the wifes and the dual channel in my truck. I used their new ODB power module which is a much easier hookup than the PowerMagic module. ODB is the Power Magic EZ.

I had two incidents in my previous truck. One, someone backing into the truck the other someone pulling out of a parking spot. In both cases I went directly to the offenders insurance company. After the initial run around I told them I had video. Sent them a clip, not the entire video. That shut down conversation stone cold. Fully paid repairs and rental car with no claim on my insurance.

I installed a Garmin mostly so that I could take mementos of scenery without having to hold a phone. I installed it on the passenger side behind the rear view mirror so it wouldn't be distracting. I can control it with voice (e.g. "OK Garmin, take a picture").

I wouldn't by any means call it essential, but it was fun pulling video of a moose at the Fairbanks airport and using the timelapse feature for drives through Badlands and Craters of the Moon. In the end they are just snapshots though, not photographs; I don't think the angle of view or the fact that it's behind a windshield do the images any favors.

Recorded video can work against you as easily as it can work for you.

BlackVue 4K DR900S-2ch Dash cam

It’s a power storage device alternative to a rechargeable battery. Basically a capacitor with a lot of energy storage capabilities without being subject to danger from high temperatures. Batteries can melt down or fail if they get too hot.

They can have capacity rating in Farads. Most capacitors are rated in ‘microfarads’. These are small, but have massive ratings.

They are built in capacitors that unlike standard capacitors release there charge slowly like a battery.
Technical definition:
A supercapacitor (SC), also called an ultracapacitor, is a high-capacity capacitor with a capacitance value much higher than other capacitors, but with lower voltage limits, that bridges the gap between electrolytic capacitors and rechargeable batteries.

The BlackVue dash Cam actually uses a power cable from the cars battery to power the system. It may have a cap inside to help maintain a steady voltage but it does not require an internal battery to operate.

Power Magic Pro went Bad

My Power Magic Pro went bad.

When I opened it up, the printed wiring board had corrosion.

Strange since it was up under the dash.

I had it in service for 10 months.

But otherwise very please with the Blackvue.

Did you contact BlackVue about the problem. I wonder if they would warranty it.

F-250 Up-Fitter Switches

With the F-250 up-fitter switches, the blackvue is wired to use one of the up-fitter switches.
So when the power magic pro went bad, I cut it out of the circuit.
I was not using the "12 hour / 24 hour continue record when parked function" that the power magic pro provides, and the up-fitter switches power down on ignition off, so cutting it out of the circuit was the easiest solution.

I did go online and found I could get a replacement power magic pro for about $25.

I did not pursue calling the vendor for warranty replacement. It had been in service 10 months, so not sure their warranty period but a call to them might be worth it.

The easy path was just to cut it out of the circuit.
