I'm going to full-time in my new 28' CCD...
Hey all-
This is my first post. I am changing my lifestyle (a lot!) and decided to buy 2 acres of land for my new airstream, I quit my job, opened my own business, and now I can start to enjoy life!!
I just bought a new, 2007 28' International CCD with the dark (black) wood and turquoise accent interior. I have never owned a trailer before nor have I lived in one for more than a weekend. I still need a tow vehicle for it, I am having it delivered to me next week.
I am setting up a pad on my land that will have water/power/sewer hook-ups so I will be able to comfortably stay in the airstream full-time. I will be building a house over the next 2 years but I will be working on my new business first (bmw service/custom fab shop).
Is there anything I just have to know/do to make my experience as fun as possible? I am 25yrs old, single and I have an 11lb Boston Terrier who will be "roughing" it with me.
Thoughts?
Concerns?
Tid-Bits of knowledge I can't live without?

welcome to the forums m3...
and to airstreamin...
so this is gonna be primarily a park model?
well they are used lots of ways, hope u get to travel in it some time too...
where do you live that the zoning allows living in an rv?
must be the 'building a house' aspect that allows this, or have u checked?
have a great time with the new 'stream.
and post pictures!
cheers

IF it really is gonna be stationary, many suggest RAISING it up on jack stands to save the axles and tires...
both of which deteriorate faster without exercise.

M3 Ryan, of course you meant BMW motorcycles, right? Motorcycle production preceded automobiles by 5 or six years

Unfortunatly, no. I meant the cars. I have been working on them since I was 18 and enjoy every minute on it. I would like to learn the bikes too, but don't have any expierence with them as of right now.
As far as the zoning is concerned, I am allowed to live in an RV as long as I am building a house. I have the permit to rebuild the current home which has already been torn down, so I am good to go for 2 years, and then I can extend it for another 2 years if I need to.
Thanks for the warm welcome all!

Looking back on it from the perspective of a 38 year old, when I was 25 I could have lived in a cardboard box and been happy. Depending on your location, you may want to build a shop large enough to keep the airstream in and still have room to work on the cars. That will make full-timing a little bit more pleasant when it's very cold or rain. Every unmarried motorhead knows that the shop is more important then the house, anyway. Every married motorhead knows that, too. We just can't say it out loud anymore.

LOL, so true!
I had thought of putting the airstream in the shop too... The shop is as big as I am allowed to have, 40'x60' (2,400sqft) so it would be a little tight since it has an office in it and 2 of my cars, plus lifts, equipment, ect... Maybe on the side of the shop where its partially covered/sheltered in the bad weather though..

If I was as smart as you at 25, I would not be on the road selling at 51. I hope the Airstream works out for you, be prepared to not have all the storage room of other brands, and having a roof over the units head may sound crazy but really would be nice for lots of reasons I will leave off this post. That being said get a good tow vehicle and see the country. The people you meet and experiences are precious indeed, even if for just weekends as you build your home and business. GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks for the advice! I plan to downsize a lot of junk I have so I won't need much storage. I have never had a trailer before, so I doubt I will miss what I don't know about or have expierence with.
I went and did the walk-though on the trailer today. Now I am really excited to get into it! I bought the extended wty for 7 years, it was an additional $2175 but I felt it was worth it after all I have heard from others.
Wish me luck! I start moving friday, and then I will have the trailer delivered next week sometime.
I can hardly wait!!!

Man, that is beautiful. I wish I had done what you're doing at 25. Enjoy it. Your tow vehicle will be fine.

Sharp looking, love the accent color. I think you and your furry friend, (where's that picture? ahem?) will be very comfortable. Do join for a rally and a trip now and then, you'd be surprised how much the change makes the interior space seem bigger when the world changes from the windows.

good looking rig m3!
are you gonna pour a pad or use gravel/crushed rock?
is there utilities to the property?
how remote or secure is the area?
at 25 i was seldom home, but my a/s was parked with 24/7 neighbors, when not rolling somewhere...
so i'd be concerned a little about security, and the issue of someone towing it off.
while boston's have the heart of a lion, they aren't exactly guard dogs...
we'll enjoy seeing how your a/s camp evolves...
cheers

That's a good looking rig! Congratulations, I like the accent color.
There are 3 things you should do immediately after getting it (IMO).
- Pull the floor register and tape some window screen to the bottom around the edges. It will keep a lot of stuff from dropping down into the ductwork.
- Get a small tube of clear caulk and do the corners of the shower. There is a 99.44% certainty that it will leak.
- Enjoy!

you can do it!
good for you... my husband and i and our akita are very happy in our 27 ft. overlander, we are remodeling while in it so it poses own set problems, but we put our favorite things inside and we love it... in fact some days i question even building another house (we too are living in ours while planning to build next fall). we put up a fence for the dog so she can get out when wants to but she is happy with a blanket over "her" sofa she is cozy and happy. couple picts in winter living post. we just had a 20 below day and stayed warm and happy good luck, enjoy
!! lovely new airstream you have!

My wife and I full-timed in our 28' CCD for a year, with our Corgi and two cats. We learned that you can be perfectly happy without all the stuff people seem to think is absolutely necessary these days. If we were to do it again, even if money were no object, I'd probably stick with the 28' CCD and not get anything bigger.
The only thing we really missed was a fully-equipped kitchen, as we do a lot of serious cooking. My sense is that most people, especially younger people, don't really cook that way, and wouldn't be concerned.
Weather wasn't much of a factor, expcept for the coldest nights in winter, when the water pipes at some campgrounds froze up. That has nothing to do with the Airstream though. You could avoid that by insulating the pipes that feed your rig, which is not always an option at an RV facility.

You should have no trouble finding a discerning mate with that rig. However, its a shame to put that International on a bed and not use her for what she is really meant for. Double wides are made to live in, AS's are made to roll. GG
