Clipper, Emergency Exit, Land Yacht, Emergency Ladder

This applies specifically to the Clipper but may apply to other models with side window emergency exits.

The Clipper Class A is a top of the line unit but that emergency exit ( I swear you can see the earth's curvature ) is top of the world when you look down from the rear bedroom exit window. There is a good possibility that it will get hurt when you hit the ground if you have to exit in a hurry.

Before embarking on our Yukon trip in 2008 I thought it best to address the problem and remove one more concern that one thinks of in the middle of the night.

To find a workable solution that would not break the bank, or create other problems of storage etc, I tried different ideas and came up with this which works quit well.

We had two fire drills after completion, and are comfortable with the modifications made.

Material: White PVC 4" pipe cut lengthwise for the window ledge.
Foot rails made from a donor aluminum lawn chair. (Covered with pipe wrap insulation.)
Anti mark and placement ends from excess pool toys.
3/8 rope.
Anchors made from stainless bathroom assists.
I also installed a spring support to keep the window open. I salvaged it from an older truck canopy door, but they are available from any RV outlet.

The assembly stores together above the bedroom window and and total weight is about 4lbs.

To assist in getting to the window level we store a collapsible stool between the bed and the cabinet.

We hope to never have to use it in an emergency, but we do plan to have another fire drill this season just to refresh our memory on what we are going to do.

Emergency Exit Ladder

This is the kit, see original post, that is stored out of the way, but right where its needed, above the BR emergence exit window.

This may be the best idea I have come up with, and all for something I hope to never use!!!!!!

You ought to patent that ladder. Great idea!

Good idea, but now try it in the middle of the night in thick smoke gasping for air with no shoes on and flames licking at your bare backside.

I say this after reading a report on another forum of a lady trying to get out of a window of a burning RV and ending up with 2nd and third degree burns over most of her body.

I do hear what you are saying but,

if you have it set up and have used it a couple times it will make it easier in an emergency. I have 3 smoke smoke alarms, a night lite at the exit, (I have a LED mounted there, and a hand help spotlight that plugs into the power plug by the cabinet) and numerous small LED flashlights. To tumble out without any aid for a step, it is going to hurt. And you are not going to operate a fire extinguisher or help anyone else if you have a broken wrist or ankle.

The best of plans can fail Tony, but we have to try to be prepared.

How's your North American tour going? You should update your thread with some details and refresh you tracking link.

Not much into blogs so the picasa album - photos plus reasonable detail in the captions is about the best I can do even though there can sometimes be days or even weeks lag until I get around to it.. The spotwalla map is always up to date and only shows the last ten days of the trip. More days can be shown by altering the "history" field. Both links work OK as far as I can tell.

Yes Tony I figured it out. When I quote your post, your travel info sites do not show while I am posting, so I forgot you had them below on each post.

You have had a great time in Mexico by those fantastic pictures. You are also a brave man if any of those news releases are true?

I like your Cutter that has better access to the rad than my Clipper. I have not figured out how I will ever change the rad without removing the rear cap?????? Thats not a big deal but sure would not be able to do it on the road without some help. The good thing is the water pump on the Cummins is accessible from the top of the engine.

Added this to the emergency equipment on the CLIPPER this week. Light, strong and easy to store. ( It will be great to shovel the snow away before putting on the chains when I go south east through Buffalo and Chicago !. )

Another one of those updates I couldn't resist.
