Ceiling Vent Mystery

All through the galley and in the bathroom and bedroom are ceiling vents. When the AC or Heat strips are ON, only the vent adjacent to the AC inlet blows. When I have the thermostats set to furnace, then the floor vents blow. What makes all the other zillions of ceiling vents blow?

OK, this was easier than I realized. Closing off the "main" vent at the a/c ducted more air to all the other vents.
