Packard's 1950esh ultramatic was a lockup torque converter transmission - a step up from Buick's dynaflow - but not a match to GM's 4 speed hydromatic.

The 4L80E is an electronic-controlled version of the THM 400 with an overdrive unit added.

My 2004 2500HD 4WD Duramax/Allison had an Eaton locker rear end. Had to change the rear end lubricant at 500 miles. There were some reported problems if this maintenance was not performed. I had mine just under 100,000 miles and no problems with any truck components. I did get stuck in muddy grass while trying to park my Airstream trailer at Sugar Creek. Had to be pulled out with a tractor.

Most modern transmissions use a lockup torque converter. Adds MPG and lowers RPMs. Great addition if you don't currently have it.
