Reverse gear sometimes

Just bought a 1997 30' LandYacht on a Chevy chassis. When warm and put in reverse, nothing happens (sometimes). It is like it is in neutral. If I pull down slightly on the lever, it will go into reverse and slightly up you can hear the parking brake comming on. This implies to me that the tranny is OK and linkage isn't. Had some mechanics lub and oil everything and it got better, but still not right. I bought the service manual but cant find where to dig to find where the shifter motion is turned into a signal to the tranny and brake. Any ideas, pictures or diagrams would be useful.

Chevy P-30 chassis auto trans has a threaded rod that passes through the bracket on the trans for shifting. You just need to tighten the nuts up, with engine OFF, ign on, so you can see parking brake come on.
