Onan starting issue

I just picked up a 2000 Land Yacht and have a question on the Onan diesel 7000 watt generator. Generator worked fine when I picked it up but after 600 miles and at home it will not start. It fires on one cylinder and will continue to fire as long as I hold the start switch on. It dies as soon as I release the switch. Fuel gauge is over half and much more than when I picked it up so i don't think it is low fuel.

Any thoughts?

Not sure since you never posted the model of the generator but many Onan gensets will not keep running if they're not producing power. As soon as you let off the starter they'll stop.

Here's a link to a great site that's dedicated to generators and older machines:

I would assume the generator would at least see the convertor in the MH as a load on startup.

Is there any type of lockout that I have overlooked?

First thing to check is proper oil level. They have a safety shut down for low oil.

Level is down to just about add a quart.
What grade oil is recommended?

I use 15/40 in mine but I think any good engine oil will do.

A little dinosaur fat did the trick.

Now on to winterizing the ice maker

Thanks

Yep, it's usually the easy things with those. I'd go to the web site I posted and pick up a manual for that genset. They have a listing posted somewhere and they do come in handy. No power generation and low oil level are common fault systems that will inhibit running. The fault I was referring to had nothing to do with load. It has to do with whether the unit will produce voltage or not. No AC output = no run. Same with the low oil level indicator. Low oil = no run as you have found out.

Edit: Here's a link to the operators manual for the Onan HDKAJ model generator

https://www.twinslan.net/~n0nas/manuals/onan/981-0161B%20Onan%20HDKAJ%20HDKAK%20HDKAT%20HDKAU%20Mob ile%20Genset%20Operator's%20manual%20(08-2005).pdf

And here's the service manual:
