Land Yacht questions

We're going to take a look at a 1996 Land Yacht this weekend, and thought I'd try to get some basic information before we go.

1. Does these coaches have full air bag suspension, or is it a mix of springs and air bags?

2. This particular coach has a propane-powered generator. Was a diesel-powered generator available?

3. Side or rear radiator?

4. Full disc brakes, disc/drum, or all drum brakes? Air brakes?

Land Yachts were available from 30' to 36' and had various chassis from Ford, Chev, Spartan, Oshkosh, and Freightliner.
We can not answer your questions without a model # or serial #.

Welcome to the Airstream Land Yacht world.

Yep, need more info. Mine is built on a chevy P30 chassis but you're obviously looking at a diesel.

We saw the coach today. Didn't see any evidence of air bags. Propane-powered generator, current owners don't know much about what might have been available. Rear radiator. Drum brakes. Also, 19.5" tires. Mid-entry, which we like. The bedroom was a bit small, with not much room around the island queen bed. The driver's and navigator's seats are up on a raised area, much like the Foretravel Grand Villas, but not quite so high (maybe 4" vs 8" on the GV). Might have something to do with the wheel wells, but I'm not sure.

Overall, a decent coach for vacations, but not a fantastic coach. Some evidence of neglect over the years, and the current owners didn't seem very knowledgeable about it. The price is attractive. Not the coach for us, but someone will get a decent coach.

Yes, it is. The current owners said they mainly used it to go trout fishing at Bennett Springs State Park. It is a decent coach, just not the right one for us. ALL engine work will have to be done from either underneath or from the bedroom, since it has a rear radiator. The interior is nice, and Jo Ann was quite pleased with the headroom. The price may be a big high, but not outrageously high. Probably a bit of room for negotiation.

As I said, looks like a decent coach, just not the right one for us.

It sounds like it's on a Freightliner (Oshkosh) X-Line chassis like my 1996 Cutter. As a matter of fact, our owners manual is for the 96 Land Yacht pusher. I purchased the Cutter from the original owner who ordered it from Airstream and flew to Ohio to pick it up. They told him there was no Cutter manual. I guess because they made so few. Ours has a lot of options from the factory, including disc brakes all around, leather seats, diesel generator, etc. No reason to buy one that old unless all the goodies are on it since the price will be similar to one with fewer options. The motors of pushers (that I've seen) can only be worked on from underneath or from the top by lifting the bed. Access is quite good for most do it yourself maintenance. It's good to look at as many as you can to figure out what you really want and not have buyers remorse. Good luck!
