Land Yacht Diesel Routine Service

After the 3300 mile trip this summer to Maine, I had the Land Yacht back in for routine maintenance last month. Specifically wanted them to change the transmission filter and fluid along with other fluids and filters.

The Allison Transmission was getting jerky at low speeds and sometimes while shifting from 5th to 6th speed.

Took it out on a 50 mile drive yesterday and its like night and day!!! So smooth shifting that I have to watch the tach or digital number to see whether it has shifted. It also took 11.5 qts of oil.

All together, $367 for lube, oil, tranny, and filter changes. Also had the fuel filter changed. Leaving today for trip to North GA so anxious to see if gas mileage changes. Averaged 12.5mpg on the Maine trip.

Sounds like a great deal and with good results. Always wanted a diesel AS but I guess I'll have to settle for my 454 gasser.

The Alisonís are bullet proof. Keep it serviced and it will outlast any auto on the market.

Update to original post

The Land Yacht had a coolant leak that got worse over time. Around January it was using a gallon of coolant per tank of gas but not leaking or blowing out the exhaust.

After further inspection, the shop determined it had a blown head gasket. Reps from both Freightliner and Cummins also did inspections as the motor only had 82k miles.

Both stated lack of use and long storage times causes this problem in many diesel RV motorhomes. Mine was no exception, as it sat in storage for 10 years before I bought it. The reps said the engine was designed to run up to 500k miles with only routine maintenance, but not sit in storage. Needless to say I spent $3500 on repairs.

In March I completed a 2500 mile trip from Georgia to California. It ran perfect.....not only did it never use a drop of coolant or oil, but the gas mileage increased to an average of 13mpg. Most of that is due to improved compression in the motor which made it run at lower RPM at long driving periods at 65mph. I could not be happier with it.

Actually, since my house is on the market; I am considering selling the Land Yacht and getting a smaller truck and AS trailer as replacement.

Maybe after I get back to GA we can meet up for coffee someplace. Would like to see the improvements you have made on your AS as well.
