What Does Everyone Use To Jack-Up Their Camper?

I'll need to pull the wheels off on my new-to-me 290. What does everyone use to jack up the motorhome and support it to safely work under it?

Thanks!

I've been using floor jacks and 12 ton jack stands. Depending on your weight be advised that jack stands are rated as pairs, a set of 12 ton jack stands are only rated at 12 tons when used as a pair. This week I plan to buy a 20 ton bottle jack, air over hydraulic as my floor jacks really have to work hard to lift the rear of my MH. It can be a challenge to lift and place a jack stand as often the lifting point is the same place you want to place the jack stand. Once it's up in the air some folks put the tires underneath for added safety if it should fall.

Welcome Aboard👍

I use floor jacks & jackstands...one I've had for 30yrs, the other a newer 'old fart' jack.😂

Thankfully I’ve not had to do it myself yet, but I do carry a small hydraulic bottle jack for that purpose, just in case. One important caution is be sure you lift it from the trailer frame, do NOT lift on the axle. You risk permanent damage (bending) if you lift on the axle. I attended an informational session hosted by dexter axle company at the last international rally and the presenter repeatedly emphasized that point.

We don’t have a MoHo, but on the farm we have tractors, large trucks, and trailers. We use floor jacks for lifting, and jack stands for secondary support.

Just so you know, ASME PALD testing typically requires that devices successfully complete a series of tests at 1.5X of the published rating. So there is a safety factor buried in the design. I still use a secondary support, just in case.

Is that true of Harbor Freight products?

Anything from Harbor Freight that’s used for lifting big heavy objects needs to be backed up by something that can be trusted like heavy timber racking.

Hi

One other (possibly to obvious to be mentioned ....) point is that whatever surface the jack is going on needs to be pretty sturdy. You are putting a *lot* of pounds per square inch on the bottom side of that jack .....

So, where do you put the stand if you lift the TT with a bottle jack under the lift point? 2022 Globetrotter 23FBT.

If you get one of these (the black/silver unit on the left) you don't need a separate jack and jack stand. I used two of them to change out the axles on my 25-ft trailer. Of course, as you can see by the yellow/orange jack stand I used a jack stand anyhow since I tend to be a belt & suspenders kind of guy.

The jack/jack stand combo easily lifted my 25-ft trailer from the jacking point and there is a built-in jack stand which can be set to automatically latch into place as you lift the trailer.

Yes that is true of HF products. Automotive lift devices go through an extensive test regimen, and the providers we consider low end work hard to pass the tests.

Any portable lifting device should always be backed up with appropriate secondary devices. Mechanical things can always fail.
