Updating the backup camera.

I am at the point of reassembling the rear body panel that I discussed
in my "stupid, stupid, stupid" thread. This question is as much about
technical issues as it is about style.

I took the original camera apart and it is in pristine condition inside.
The outside of the housing and mounting bracket have some rust.
Not too hard to sand and paint. I don't know if the camera works
but the whole system does not work.

Should I weld up the holes and use one of those small cameras mounted
somewhere else? Perhaps just above the spare tire? Is it violating
the AirStream Classic style to get rid of that great big brick hanging
off the rear end?

Should I put a modern camera in the old housing? Perhaps a security
camera like this:
HFW4239T-ASE

That one has much better low light performance. While I have it all
apart I can run a new cable for the camera.

Is there an advantage in having the camera mounted so high?
I was also thinking about some camera systems that also have cameras
looking back on each side of the vehicle to cover the blind spots.

Pete.

If it was me, I'd put a new camera in the old housing. If you don't end up using the old housing, I'll take it, and use it to cover up my new camera!

I'd run hardwired since you have access, my wireless is a pain, too much interference

Advantage of having it up high is being able to see over the toad

Re: blind spots, my convex mirrors do a great job, i really don't have any complaints

I did essentially what Rob described. I mounted a new camera under the original sunshade so it looks original from a distance. I also added a side camera behind the front wheel well curb side. I hard wired over the roof and down through the fridge vent. Through the floor behind the fridge and popped back up by the heater core. That's where I located the control box. I used Rear View Safety equipment, been doing great so far, about a year now.

The housing is 3 5/8" across, 4 1/8" high, and 8 1/4" deep on the inside.
There is a bracket in there for mounting the original camera that I would
remove.

Pete.
