Thermostat housing repair parts

So since the motor home is overheating, started with a thermostat replacement first, What I can not find is what these two parts are called and what is their purpose? The first few pictures shows a sensor of some sort I believe, It was mounted to the housing of the thermostat on an bracket and connected to some wires, The other comes out second opening in the housing itself and is connected by tubing to the carburetor. Can anyone help to identify these parts? Thank you for your help.

Hi Chris, I know this stuff for my '84, as I have to have it all in place and functional to pass smog here in CA.
Here is the vacuum diagram that I believe to be correct for a Federal emissions 1984.

Pic #1:
That part is a vacuum switch and part of the original emissions setup.
I believe it is called the "TRC Solenoid Control Valve".
It controls or is part of the AIR injection smog pump control...

And here it is as my '84 should be...

Pic #2:
That is a coolant controlled vacuum switch.
On mine is called EFE/TVS switch.
Here it is on my setup.

I have 2 of those... on in the thermostat housing, and another on the fwd part of the cylinder head...
The other is called the "Spark/TVS switch.

Mine.

Thank you, we do not have emissions here in Florida so I assume I can bypass replacing that part. Thank You very much, This is very helpful.

That solenoid is part of the throttle return control system. I know because when taking off my thermostat housing rust on the bolt hole twisted my solenoid and broke the wiring connector and vacuum hose fitting.

Yes, I am a visual person... More "Monkey see Monkey do".
I have weeks of research into it, with books, diagrams, and parts. It's been amazing tough to figure it out what should be there, and its not over yet. There are apparently multiple thermostatic switches with different temperature settings and finding out which one is correct is tricky!

If I can find the part I will replace it, did you happen to purchase a new one? If so where did you get it?

I got my "new" part from the junkyard.
Not sure where to find them new, and I have looked.

All those vacuum-operated valves?? You can toss them all. They're probably not working any way. Or, you can leave them in place and by-pass them with new vacuum hoses.

BTW, I'll bet those old "vacuum harnesses" are leaking. That's probably a major part of your problem.

FYI - The only vacuum hose you really need is from carb to vacuum advance.

They are called Thermal Vacuum switches......Replaced "all" of the vacuum line when I rebuilt my 1989 325....was not difficult, but time consuming...thank goodness for the original vacuum wiring diagram on the side of the air cleaner ! Regards, Bob

.....AND.....if you've got a smog (aka, AIR) pump, you can dump that too - along with the diverter valve and that Qudra-Jet Carb. Replace it with an Edlebrock. Trust me. Your rig will thank you for it many times over.

My MH also used to overheat. I've since:

Had radiator re-cored

Replaced/installed-
New hoses
Jeg's water pump
Stewart/Robertshaw #309 195degree thermostat

Swapped mechanical fan for a Flex-a-lite 295 electric fan

So far, so good. I suspect the radiator was the culprit.
If a radiator is otherwise good, a clogged core can be "rodded out" by a radiator shop. Mine had too many pinholes and needed to have the core replaced.

Chris,
A couple of things...
That valve should have a black plastic cap on the single nipple end, which encompasses the twin electrical connector, AND a little filter that fits over the open nipple. The nipple on that end, acts as a vent/bleed when the valve is not energized.
Here is a Diagram taken from my 1984 GM Factory Service Shop Manual.
Everyone should have a copy of the relevant year GM manual for the "10/20/30 Light Truck" as it has the most complete info out there, and is invaluable. I found my scrappy copy on Ebay for $20.

It seems, your solenoid is mounted on the thermostat housing which is correct. Mine is not!

As I have to understand what each emissions item does and how it works, I dug into this component, and what it does.
It seems that a signal is sent from the Distributor Tach output between 1700rpm and 1890rpm to the"Engine Speed Switch", which should be mounted on the rear part of the left hand valve cover...
And here is mine, bottom lh side of pic. This was before I refitted my emissions correct Quadrajet.

This switch then energizes the solenoid to open, sending vacuum to a the "Throttle Lever Actuator", a vacuum pod on the carb, holding the throttle open.
I believe this holds the throttle open to stabilize the mixture upon deceleration.

Here is a video of her running, replaced the thermostat and bypassed the vacuum switch for now, have one coming in on Monday and will replace it. sorry about the fuzzy picture, it appears the camera lens had something on it. It does not appear to be overheating anymore. Next up, new exhaust as its badly needed an a new gas tank.

The little bottle may be windshield washer fluid supply.? Where does the hose on top of it go?
