Road trip

We are in week two of our 3 week trip. The first week involved family visits and group camping. It was good to spend time with everyone but much more peaceful now that we are on our own. I'll post more as I can.

We left Colorado beginning of the month and headed east to Michigan. Now in the up on lake superior.

Nice picture and great trip.

We did a very long trip last year including a fair amount of time around Lake Superior. If you haven't yet there are some great parks right on the Locks at Sault Ste Marie.

After looking at the upload the sign probably isn't readable. We stopped by the Gay Bar in Gay Michigan. Gay is the ore processing site on Lake Superior for ore from the Mohawk Copper mine.

Many years ago while I was attending MTU it was called the Gay Tavern. The ceiling and walls were full of weapons and artifacts from every war up to Vietnam. Along with several animal heads and pelts. They had a huge antique mahogany bar. More deer hunting was done on "Mahogany Ridge" than any other place in the UP.

The bar was sold and the building has been remodeled. The bar and antiques are gone along with the character. The new owners are playing on the "Gay Bar" theme. Not a bad place to stop for a $2 longneck and $5 burger.

We climbed Brockway mountain on our way out of Copper Harbor. The crows were having fun in the stiff breeze. I'm very pleased with performance of the Banks Power Pack! I wouldn't hesitate pointing this thing up any mountain pass.

And don't forget a left onto the Gunflint Trail at Grand Marais, which dead-ends at the BWCAW.

Nice campgrounds on lakes on either side of the Trail, and a wilderness campground overlooking the BWCAW.

We were blessed with this beautiful camp site that we stumbled across after a long day of beating into a strong gusty quartering headwind. We spent last night near Detroit Lake in northern MN. We are at the Snake Creek camp grounds where the Missouri River crosses 44 in SD.

Hi,
Just wondering, have you been keeping track of your mpg with your diesel on this trip? Be great to know.
Thanks, Derek

12.4 was the worst and 13.2 the best. We have been fighting those nasty quartering head winds all the way. I'll update my Banks installation in mech corner when we get home. Very happy with it so far.

We got home about noon today and dropped the oil and gave it a good wash job. Pretty much unpacked and will clean the inside tomorrow before putting it back in the barn.

Just uploaded some pictures from the camera so I'll post a few of the trip.

These were from both sides of the Mackinaw Bridge.

Fayette Historic Ghost Town

From the bridge we followed the Lake Michigan shore to Fayette and found a ghost park. We were the only humans (and dog) there and self registered. Had a beautiful sunset, earlier picture, a explored the town site the next morning.

After a week on the road our next night was spent a a full service RV park in Ishpeming. I would highly recommend the Country Village RV park for a one stop reprovision. Its right behind a RV super store, Shopco, gas station, and brew pub. Beer, pizza and and early to bed. Spent the next morning doing all the chores and headed to Copper Harbor where we spent 3 days at Fort Wilkins State park.

Fresh Walleye from Lake Fanny Hooe on opening day.

Thanks for the great photos and narrative.

I am from Michigan originally, left 43 years ago, and the UP is one of my favorite places to wander around. On my bucket list is to spend at least one month seeing the UP in the middle of the hot summer, much better than being in Virginia in July and August.

I really miss the smoked white fish. I will get my fill in August when I go to the Under the Bridge Rally.

I spent 5 years at Michigan Tech back in the late 70s. Spent a lot of time exploring the Kewanaw Peninsula. It was good to get back and spend some time. I may try to buy some property up there when I retire.
