Lucky you found one and that it does fit. The early 90's compartment are only 30" wide, requiring at least a 4" expansion.

Yes the frame is in the way to make the compartment deeper. I measured it several times and like I said it looked like it would.
Hopefully it'll be up and running by Saturday. Then I can scratch that off my list.

Sharing my experience of replacing the original 6.5Kw Onan in my 1990 345LE coach. I actually spent $1200 plus getting the original gennie rebuilt, as it had not done too many hours, but it still was not 100% unreliable. And noisy. I didnt want to risk the AC going off because the gennie fails for my dogs if we leave the coach for a few hours in the summer heat. And I as I work remotely often I needed to know I have reliable power on demand anytime.

So I bit the bullet and ordered a new Onan 5500 QG EFI Commercial unit. Yes, it was close to $7k, but I am aiming to keep this coach from now on! The EFI means that it will start at any altitude, and you don't have to worry about regularly exercising it to 'clean' the carbs. Press the start and GO.

It is 4 " longer (as confirmed in the thread above, but I found that there is space to make the compartment wider to fit by extending 7" under the front dinette bench. It was super tight, BUT, it fits and is literally perfect. This new gennie is the same one they use here in Hollywood on movie sets, especially in the catering trucks. It's quiet, super reliable, and the access door is still functional for all service needs. And it runs both roof AC's without problems.

I've had it installed now for the past few months, and it's perfect. I used a ton of sound proofing in the compartment under the bench in the cabin, and more under sofa. It's just a gentle vibration. Oh, and these gennies are cooled from the underneath so you can pretty much block off the top and sides.

One thing to mention, you have to make sure the 'smog' input gas line to the gennie is blocked off, and that the fuel line return is a large enough bore, other wise the gennie wont run properly.

At some point in the next 10 years, I predict new battery tech will allow up to 10x capacity for the same size and weight of battery. This literally changes everything. We'll be able to swap out our motorhome gas engines, transmissions, drive chain, gas tank, generators and existing battery banks for a plug and play electric motor/battery bank/control system that replaces the 454 powerplant, that could allow 1500 mile range and will power everything in the coach for weeks. I'll be first in the line to do this! (btw, I work in tech, and have good reason to expect this based on some of the extraordinary advances going on in battery chemistry)...and expected advances in solar panel efficiency will of course also give us new roof panels that will deliver 4x more power from the sun. Personally I rarely drive more than 300 miles in a day. So even getting 100 miles from the roof will help a great deal! :-)

Thanks for the input about future battery technology. This new generator will do me fine for the rest of my life also.
Needless to say the generator is in and working. Ran around 6 hours yesterday with both A/C's on. It came with a 'quit start guide' which don't say much except 'check the manual' which is not provided. Got to go on line to purchase.

The Cummins 5.9 diesel is running great.

The Allison T-1000 transmission is working great.
the water don't leak.
The sewer don't leak.
The hot water tank works.
The frig will last another year(I hope)

Still got a couple things to fix but then I'm ready for a road trip!
