Problems replacing backup camera/ what does the rear rib look like ?

We are trying to replace our 1985 345 backup cam with a new wired one. The cable is stuck and we can’t get it from the access panel out through the hole in the back. Would also be helpful if anyone has pictures of what the bones look like. We are trying to do this without destroying the interior.

Please do not ask why we didn’t go with wireless.

I took some photos when I removed the outside panels.
There is a plastic piece behind the aluminum skin that provides
support. The thick black wire goes to the camera.



The wires run between the fiberglass insulation and the skin.



The wires run all over the place. The run through holes in
the supporting ribs that form the roof support.



I don't think that you can snake any wires through the roof.
I added some new wires for a camera but I had it all apart.

There are a number of conductors in the existing camera cable.
You probably can run your new camera using the original cable.

If your Airstream is factory stock, it will be nearly impossible to run anything in the walls/ceiling without removing panels. The ribs have holes for runs, but "threading that needle" is nearly impossible. Plus, the walls are full of horrible fiberglass insulation, and you'll end up shifting and packing it and losing what little R value it may still have. I am all for wires (better signal, no interference, less likely to lose picture, etc.), but you may need to look for an alternate route for the run, perhaps even underneath the body or on the roof (be sure to buy UV rated "direct bury" cable so it is durable enough for an exterior application). I there was already a camera, do experiment with using the cable already in place. You might get lucky!

I picked out a coax and a pair of wires from the old cable and spliced the ends of the cable that came with my new $200 color high resolution system. Works great!

Other option is go underneath and up the back.

And it doesn’t really have to be way upon top to be useful. I did because it looks over the top of the Jeep in tow.

I did the same thing and used the old enclosure to mount the new LED camera. Worked out great.
