Oman gen, emerald 111

I'm trying to get my gen going again.
It had gotten hard to get started, and now won't get going at all.

I've taken the carb out and cleaned it and put it back in, new plugs, new fuel filter, and it's not starting. I'm beginning to think it my be lacking spark to the plugs. I can see that there is a coil and some points on the other side of the engine. Can this be serviced with the gen in place.

Or does it call for taking the unit out of the compartment?
It doesn't look easy to get the gen out of the body.
Any tips on going thru this problem, is there an easy way to get it out of the body or to deal with the gen in place.

In taking the gen out of its compartment, do you have to deconstruct the frame of the compartment?

Thanks Richard

I know Mike (Matco) is an expert on replacing points and condenser with a mirror and using his phone as a flash lite......a little help here, Mike.....personally I gave been working on generators for 30 plus years, it comes right out through the door, I have rebuilt both mine in the 325LE and the 370LE. Takes about 30 mins to remove and much easier to work on the workbench or even the floor. You can take the extra time to clean up the generator compartment while you have the generator out. Regards, Bob

Thanks Bob, I had thought that someone had resently had done that job with the gen in place. I remember it being described as a Houdini type of project.

Can you tell me how you got yours out that quickly. Any special moves in getting it out the door? Did you use a skip loader to get it out of the hatch?

My compartment could use a clean up if it's not all that hard to get out.

Thanks for any insight you have to share.

Cheers Richard

I've done it myself and I've done it with help. I prefer doing it myself because my help grabbed the generator by the air filter box and snapped it off. Thank my friends at Verizon for providing me with a spare for free. Although I use my electric pallet jack, you could build a table the same height as the door. Remove the fuel line, battery wire, electrical connection, exhaust. From underneath unbolt the generator from the pan. Push the generator up from underneath and place a couple of wood spacers between the generator and the pan. Now standing in front of the door place a heavy quilted blanket over the threshold of the door, lift the generator up and slide 2 2"x 4" about 30" long underneath the generator with the ends sticking out of the door opening. Using the 2" x 4"'s as a ramp slide the generator up the 2" x 4"'s out the door and onto the table. There are pictures of this somewhere on my thread of both the 370LE and the 325LE. Regards, Bob

Engine repair 101 , fuel - ignition - compression .
Check those , generally in that order .

If you have an old point ignition , I would suggest looking for electronic replacement .
For a bunch of reasons , too many to list .
At least one should be mentioned , since your in this conner - make sure to put point lube on the cam foot [ the little foot that rides the cam - that opens & closes the points , or that foot wears and the point start to close / not start after a while ] .

The last post did a good job of removing , covered

Yep John, in this case the those parts are on the other side of the unit when mounted in the chassis.

I'm sort of waiting to hear from Mike, as Bob mentioned it is possible to do the points with the unit mounted.
It may call for removing to get it sorted, will have to see.

I'll have to send Mike a pm. He's is out there in Colo having a good time.

Cheers Richard

The cylinder heads may need de-carbonized (clean out the carbon buildup). This is an often overlooked item on generator maintanance every 200 hours.

If by hunting you mean kind of surging up and down, I found that on mine the electric choke spring must be getting loose. I could see the choke adjust shaking wildly, if I just give it a poke after startup to stop it it's just fine.

Doesn't hurt to check the easy things before replacing the points

I had the same extreme hunting. I could watch the throttle go from wide open to idle and back. The choke did the same thing but that is a result of the manifold vacuum going from high to low as the throttle opened and closed. The choke has an actuator connected to the intake manifold.

I cleaned my carb in my ultrasonic cleaner and the problem was solved. It was night and day! I did not change anything else.

Richard, here is what the official cummins/onan manual says:
you may want to check item 3 while you are waiting to hear from Mike. Let me know if you want me to dig deeper in this manual.

Thanks! Didn’t mean to hijack the thread I got a Honda 2200 for now and that will give me time to further diagnose the onan without worrying about running out of battery or having to rush things. I may pull it out and do all the recommended maintenance as who knows what has or hasn’t been done...
